1870's, statue added seven years after circle named in his honor.
quote:
The bronze statue which tops the Doric column was sculpted by Alexander Doyle. The statue was first unveiled to an audience of 15,000 people — including former Confederate President Jefferson Davis, two daughters of General Lee, and Confederate General Pierre G.T. Beauregard — on February 22, 1884 (George Washington's bithday)

How could anyone watch something like that taken down is beyond me.
Are we going to start burning/stop producing American literature that mentions slavery or refers to black people as second class citizens? This is all going too far.

well what gets me, is that if we start taking down everything confederacy, when do they start attacking the founding fathers? I mean, most likely our great Jefferson raped his slaves or at least had relations with his "property".
Washington was rough on slaves too.
So then what, we go back and remove all persons who owned slaves? Where does it end? Will Jefferson parish become MLK parish?

Unjustly accused. KKK began mysteriously with Forrest joining at the urging of John Morgan and then assuming a leadership role. Disassociated himself from the group when they became too extreme.

And I think what's getting lost in all of this is that racism didn't necessarily mean "hatred". White people really believed that their race was superior, that black people were more like very smart apes. It wasn't a caste system based on hatred, just ignorance.
Abraham Lincoln thought black people were inferior, but you don't see people wanting his monument taken down.
Like the Princeton Dean said, there is good and bad measure in EVERY human being. To completely erase one's legacy over one facet of their life is not fair.

I kind of see where they're coming from, I mean if the roles were reversed and there were a bunch of statutes of blacks who had once enslaved our ancestors, most here would probably be reversed.

These asshats can't even pronounce the name of the company they're getting paid to oppose.
I'm gonna laugh when crime goes up after the statues are removed. What goes through these idiots' heads? I can just imagine them thinking, "Ahhh, everything will be better now that the statues are gone". Yup, removing statues cleans streets, fills the city budget, fixes the homeless population, and completely rids the city of crime.
Yall do know that one of Mitch's buddies is gonna get the massive bid to remove these, right? Look for it to cost AT LEAST $5MM in a city that complains about budget issues constantly. I wouldn't be surprised for it to cost $10MM
