Monticello is generally safe. Pretty sure the mayor lives there. If it were a little south around Belaire, definitely no.

Monticello is on Greenwell Springs Blvd, Merrydale is on Greenwell St. Totally different I assure you. You would not want to go to a party on Greenwell St.

I guess give us some background here
Are the kids parents similar to the area or are they smarmy gentrifiers that brag about the amenities and don’t mention how many lawmmowers they’ve had stolen?

In most unsafe areas of any town you are only in danger if you’re dealing in drugs or there late at night.

I just got to say, growing up in Park Forest in the 80's was like getting the chance to grow up in paradise.
If there was a better place to grow up as a kid in the 80's, I can't imagine how it could be better.

Are you really asking for life advice from an Internet forum?

Are your kids 17 and the party at 10p? If not, you’ll be fine.
I mean maybe don’t wear MAGA attire and fly a rebel flag behind your pickup.

Secretly follow your wife/kid to the party without their knowledge. Pack your vehicle with your full armory and stand guard a few houses down.

Monticello got beat up in 2016

We used to drive the kids through there to look at Christmas lights. Monticello and Park Forest were once nice areas. How old is your kid?

Monticello is a great neighborhood of manicured lawns and spacious homes filled with working class black people. I have over a hundred clients in that neighborhood. If Monticello is beneath you , I don’t know what to say to you except you need to find Jesus.

It used to be a great neighborhood, but I wouldn't want to live there these days. I'd definitely let my kid go to a birthday party though.

My kid got invited to a kids birthday party in Monticello. I know this is further east than the heart of NBR, but pretty sure this should be a hard pass, right? My wife thinks she could stop by for just an hour or so, says that our kid is really good friends at school with the birthday kid. I think she has that afraid of being labeled a racist vibe going.
It's a older quiet neighborhood with working class blacks and some older whites.
It's fine. Go to the party. Have fun.

I'd guess Monticello is one of the few majority black, middle-class neighborhoods in BR.
I definitely wouldn't consider it ghetto. I probably wouldn't let my kid go to a party in Glen Oaks, but I'd be fine with Monticello.

Even some of the worst areas in the USA generally are fine during the day. It’s at night you don’t want to be walking around.
Yeah. Remember, boogerwolves and hood rats are mostly nocturnal. You might get the odd hooker or crackhead out in the morning hours but most don't wake up until noon. The rest of the people out and about are largely working class folk like many of us.
I've worked in the hood for a long time now and it doesn't scare me. A stray pitbull is more dangerous than a crackhead. Now once the sun starts setting it's a different story

Will be fine during the day. Stop and get you a link of boudin at Jerry Lees when you leave. Win win.

Maybe the party will be like that BBQ that's going on when Doughboy gets out of jail in Boyz In The Hood.
I don't care what side of the isle you're on, that party looked pretty great.
