Montgomery is safer than Baton Rouge by far. Just like any other city in the south, there are good and bad areas. You can't judge an entire city by getting off the interstate exit and looking at that spot.

That said, it is not particularly a good city for night life if you're young, but even that is getting better.

I like St. Louis. They have a decent rail system. So it’s already better than any city in Louisiana

I hope it's not like this anymore, but about ten years ago, I stopped in downtown St. Louis on my way out West. When I was walking around the different bars (which were good), there were madmen dragracing down the street at midnight. All kinds of crackheads and conmen trying to get a buck out of a wide-eyed honky who was clearly uncomfortable.

That was your first problem. 90% of the murders in Birmingham happen ~300 yards north or south of I20/59 as I'd assume most large metros are the same.

They don't really run interstates through the best parts of town.

Stop being ridiculous. There's an interactive map in this link that pinpoints where all the 2018 Birmingham murders occurred. Most of them occurred fairly close to 20/59, but that's not all that interesting given the interstate bisects the city.

Hence my point.

Get away from the main interstates in most large metro areas and you will see things differently about said city.

Birmingham doesn’t belong on this list

Birmingham has gotten better over the past 15 years but you better keep your head on a swivel from Center Point to Bessemer.

in Baton Rouge I often see fired brass laying in the street. I’ve never see that in any other city.

The old mayor's(William Bell) security team got into a shoot out on 20/59 downtown in front of the BJCC a fews years ago and it was swept under the rug as a misunderstanding.

St. Louis has been bad for at least 10 years. It seems to fly under the radar despite being constantly ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in the country.

I'd rank metro areas from worst - best of the similar state capitals as
1. Montgomery
2. Jackson - madison makes it better
3. Little Rock
4 Mobile - I didn't include the east side of the bay in the ranking
5. Baton Rouge

Birmingham is better than all of these
So is Lafayette
Memphis is better than LR but worse than BR

Monroe is worse than Little Rock
Shreveport would rank 4

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Montgomery & the next 18 in BR. BR is a far more dangerous city. The nicer areas of BR are better than the nicer areas of Montgomery but the bad areas are exponentially worse in BR. We used to ride through the worst areas of Montgomery at all hours of the night in high school and I never felt in danger. Montgomery is run down and depressing to be sure, especially on the south and west sides. I wouldn’t dream of living in my old neighborhoods, but Pike Road and the east side of town going out towards Auburn are not bad at all.
