New Orleans is by far worse (central city, east, gentilly, etc.)

Your unending bias against and hatred towards all things Louisiana is hysterical.

Orangeburg, SC is a smaller version of Jackson.

I've only been through Blacksburg and it scared the shite out of me. Pretty small place, though.

To me, there's not a whole lot of difference between Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Montgomery, Birmingham, Mobile, Little Rock etc.

Birmingham is considerably better than the others

It's the only one that a significant amount of people think is actually a very nice place to live

Awesome, now this thread will be people arguing about Birmingham and why it is a shithole because they stopped at a hotel in Bessemer or got robbed going to Legion Field 20 years ago.

Good portion of it. But didn’t go too far from the exit
It's got some decent spots on the eastside but the view from 65 and 85 (up until Ann Street or so) is pretty dismal.

‘Gomery is a nasty city with a chip on its shoulder. They should move the state capital to Bham and it would implode.

My wife is from Birmingham. I've gone 2-3 times per year for the past 15 years. Like I mentioned, some of those cities have considerably nicer suburbs than others.

Birmingham proper is pretty shitty, with the exception of the Highland and Southside area. Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook are both really nice suburbs. Homewood is a mixed bag, but part of it is really nice. Hoover and Gardendale are decent but not anything tremendous. Parts of Shelby County are really nice, but you can pay for it with the commute.

Of course, you have the absolute shitholes of Bessemer, Fairfield, Midfield, McCalla, Center Point, etc.,

There used to be projects next to the cemetery. Back in the 90's two women rode their bicycles cross-country to visit his grave and a group of children beat them to death with bricks while parents sat on their porch and laughed. I can't find anything on the internet about it but it made the national news at the time.

Give me Jackson over Montgomery any day of the week. And Jackson has far better suburbs than Baton Rouge

My wife's aunt lives out in the country near Maytown and the best way to get there from her parents house is to go through Ensley or Wylam.

Wylam looks like a little town that was just abandoned 30 years ago.

Pretty much every place with 'culcha' does. It's pretty sad. For frick's sake, Wal-Mart abandoned their location in Midfield, not because too many shoppers were stealing, but because the employees were. There is a big strip of completely abandoned big box stores.

The old downtown areas aren't any better. The only thing you'll see are nail/beauty salons, barber shops, pool halls, tax services, car washes, chicken joints, pawn shops, and package stores.

This is what the entire northern half of Baton Rouge looks like

It pretty much was after the steel companies left town and the school desegregation order was enforced and the white folks fled to the suburbs.
