I live in BR so I thought our town was pretty bad. But I stopped in Montgomery on the way to Atlanta and it seems worse. Every house in the whole town seemed like it was falling apart, buildings were very run down too. A lot of people just milling around on the roadside wearing beat up clothes. Stopped at a gas station that was pretty ghetto and the Indian dude that worked the register came in from a smoke break and got into a fight with someone on the phone while registering my stuff. Combining my experience with the stories I’ve heard from the OT, Montgomery seems pretty dismal. As a tie in, has the OT ever had bad experiences in any of these cities, and how would you rank the worst towns in the South/USA?

ETA: I’ve never been there but from what I hear, St. Louis seems like the most depressing place in America. The Delta is extremely depressing as well. But I don’t feel like there’s a lot of crime there, just people trying to carve out a living.

Did you go by the flea market?

It's just like a mini-mall!

Like every mid sized town, there are good and bad parts. Montgomery has more bad than good, no doubt, but there are some okay spots.

I'm not sure anywhere can really complete with Shreveport. My wife grew up in Africa and the Middle East, but if you asked her to point out the armpit of the planet on a map I suspect her finger would land on Shreveport.

(To be fair, I really like Shreveport, flaws aside. A world of Mandevilles would make me eat a bullet.)

To me, there's not a whole lot of difference between Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Montgomery, Birmingham, Mobile, Little Rock etc.

They all have some nice areas and lots of shitty ones. Some have better suburbs than others.

Baton Rouge can be rough but it’s home. Most of the hood is bottled up in NBR with a few pockets, but I feel relatively safe because I know my way around. BR also has a some redeeming qualities and some charming places. Other cities such as Shitport, Jackson, Little Rock, etc feel a lot more desolate but maybe it’s because I’m a visitor and not form there.

Interestingly, had a conversation 2 days ago about how similar are Jackson and Montgomery. Both are state capitols, have little industry, bastions of the civil rights movements, and rely heavily on government funding. We decided Jackson is an easier place to live because it has some coolish areas and some really good restaurants.

Orangeburg, SC is a smaller version of Jackson.

New Orleans has some extremely nice areas, tons to do, world class food, professional sports.

I hardly think it's comparable to Montgomery

BR is well on it's way to Jackson 2.0 if they continue with the current leadership who's motto is hug a thug and midnight bball

Baton Rouge is Jackson with LSU and chemical plants. Those two things alone will keep it somewhat better than Jackson.
