Monroe is considerably better but that’s more an indictment of Alexandria.

I can't smell it. Might be due to me living here and just used to it or maybe they changed their processes and don't emit that smell anymore but doesn't stink to me

Monroe is better than Alexandria in almost all aspects.

When ranking Louisiana cities, Alexandria might be closer to Bogalusa than Monroe.

The paper mill is in West Monroe, not Monroe. So you only smell it with a west wind. But it's not like you can root for an east wind. With an east wind you get your olfactory system pummeled by the gigantic landfill they parked right on the
Interstate. And a south wind wafts in all the unpleasantries of South Monroe. But man, on a cold blue bird day with a strong North wind Monroe smells A-ok.

I worked on a project in Monroe about 12 years ago and I came away from it thinking, "man this has to be the worst city in Louisiana". My next project was in Alexandria and my opinion changed

Overall, they both suck.

However, I'll choose Alexandria because of Koal's BBQ and Huckleberry Brewing.

Alexandria just seems like an oversized small town than an actual city.

This is why I enjoyed growing up there in the 70's and 80's. Had that small town vibe where you knew pretty much everyone and there was really good hunting/fishing in the surrounding areas.

I have not been back since 1987 though and I really do not care visit.
