Monroe man faces charges after standoff with police

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A Monroe man has been arrested and faces multiple drug and firearm charges following an incident at a home on Wilshire Avenue on Monday, November 2, according to the Monroe Police Department.

According to MPD, officers responded after a caller reported John Strickland was in the home, armed with firearms and making statements indicating he wanted to harm himself and others.

They say Strickland was reportedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident.

Officials say MPD SWAT Team responded after Strickland failed to exit the residence. Strickland was taken into custody just before 5 p.m. and transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

MPD reports they received a search warrant for Strickland’s home, where they located multiple firearms, ammunition, narcotics, drug paraphernalia and a handgun that had been reported stolen from West Monroe.

An arrest warrant was subsequently obtained for Strickland for the following offenses:

Illegal Carrying of Weapons (Presence of Narcotics) – 4 counts
Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, Schedule IV – 2 counts
Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, Schedule III
Prohibited Acts – Drug Paraphernalia
Illegal Possession of a Stolen Firearm
Possession of CDS in the Presence of Persons Under the Age of 17

Strickland was medically evaluated, cleared and transported to Ouachita Correctional Center where he has been booked on the charges above.
