Money dance at a wedding
Is this a Louisiana thing?
I think it is a "Southern white trash thing". And as someone who comes from a long line of Southern white trash, I have been to quite a few weddings with a money dance.

I think it’s just South Louisiana. I’ve never seen it in north Louisiana.

We took about $4k to our honeymoon with the money dance. My in laws and family were having a contest to see who could put up the most. That was 24 years ago so it would be like $175k in today dollars.

It's a trash thing. 15 year old Mexican girls do it for their quince. They're mostly Mexican and central American, but this is how "macho" dads create Toxicas and Tortas. So it isn't just trashy white people.

No such thing at a Baptist wedding. Slice of wedding cake, cup of non alcoholic punch and you're out the door in under thirty minutes.

I haven’t been to a Baptist wedding like that in 15+ years. I’m sure there still are some. But people seem to spend way more money now. The reception in the church fellowship hall was a Baptist staple of the past.

of course this was in sinful S LA, where Catholic debauchery sometimes leaks out

I didn't want to do a money dance, but my relatives really wanted us to do it.
Ended up up with $5000, so I definitely ain't complaining!

“Debauchery” beats 8pm Baptist wedding curfew by 3.5 electric shuffles.
And I am neither Catholic or Baptist.
God gave life. Live it!

Same. Not quite $5k, but ended up with a good bit of cash for the honeymoon. Also we didn't have anyone pin anything to us, my best man and her maid of honor took the cash from whoever was next in line and put it in 2 cloth bags for us.
I didn't see a problem with it, but if having one is trashy I guess you can call me BabyTac

A specific dance at start of wedding reception that invites the family & friends to dance with bride & groom to give them money (pin cash to their dress/tux).
You gotta let the crowd fill up at the cheese founts and crab rangoon station and get lubed up on beer and wine…then you hit their wallets. We scored!
It was two worlds colliding
