Extremely trashy.

However anytime I’ve seen it they always take home a shite ton of cash so I guess it’s worth it

I got $1,800 from my money dance. That is not trashy

Folks who call it trashy didn't have one.

We got married in a cane field outside White Castle. We made like $2,500. For a newly Wed couple that was a lot of money.

It's definitely a white trash thing but I don't think it's exclusive to the South...

Nah, thats not nearly as trashy as the people who ride around with “buy the bride a shot” chalked on their car windows with their Venmo info.

Next thing you know they will have a QR code for the bride to Venmo or CashApp them

Would not be surprised to see it printed on the bridal shower invitation, wedding invitation, at the door to the reception, on the bride and groom.

If you can’t afford it then dont worry about it. But if it makes you feel better about being poor I guess it’s ok to come cry about it on a message board.

your only salvation is begging people for money to get out of debt within 5 years over it.

My first wife and I didn't go on a honeymoon because we were young and living paycheck to paycheck. She never got over it. She was asking a year later for my father to send us on a vacation because he didn't pay for a honeymoon. Just another one of my poor decisions in life and one of the reasons she is my EX wife now. My father was in no way obligated to do that and no way I was asking for it.

No such thing at a Baptist wedding.

Yeah, do you know why Baptists don't engage in sexual activity standing up?

Because people might think they are dancing.

Definitely a southern thing. Usually done by people who complain about beggars at gas stations and street corners, but the concepts are identical as a practical matter.

Last few weddings I’ve been to, I haven’t seen any money pinned. They usually just have a bag they put the money in as people come up.

Maybe but it is certainly an Italian thing. We did it at our NOLA wedding. My wife is from a long time Italian family in NO. (No Mafia and no pics). I don't remember what we hauled in that night. It isn't a ploy to get rich. It's just a nice gesture to wish the bride and groom good luck. Some may pin a dollar, others may give more.

The money dance is/was popular at receptions in Cajun country. Never considered it trashy, just cultural in nature. Money is pinned to the bride’s wedding veil, sometimes to the groom’s jacket. It is a great way to dance with the bride. I’m surprised some university professor has not researched the cultural or ethnic origins of this tradition.
I dunno, maybe TulaneLSU knows.
