14 year olds are car jacking and killing people in New Orleans and the parents aren't held responsible. A 14 yr old can't babysit?

Sorry if you had helicopter parents. A 14 year old is a 9th grader. 14 year olds have jobs. So yes I would trust a 14 year old depending on the individual.

Got my first blowie at 14, true story.. and yes, it was from a female, her name was Jenny.. so my point is that 14 is old enough for many things, including but not limited to babysitting siblings .

Prison is ridiculous.

It shouldn't be the oldest kid's responsibility to play the parent, though, especially if that child is "in school" and unable to attend to the younger kids. That's also ridiculous.

He wrote in his arrest report that anything terrible could have happened to Thaddeus after he left the home, including being kidnapped, run over or 'bitten by a venomous snake.'

This is so stupid

Seriously, even at 8 so long as I didn’t betray my parents trust they didn’t care where I was growing up just assuming I was out playing in the neighborhood and our neighbors looked after us in case anything happened. My parents frequently left me at home alone for a couple of hours at a time when I was 10. This is absolutely ridiculous.

I was a lifeguard from 17-19, big for my age, in great shape, lifted weights, a strong swimmer. The guy who taught me demonstrated to me in person one time what it was like to go up against a panicked swimmer. I'm glad I never had to do it IRL.

So the bar for being arrested is your kid not being inside twice? Pretty much every parent in existence would be arrested following that criteria.

That's not really what I was getting at. It's in the realm of possibility that she has shown enough shitty parenting behavior before this to cause the other mom to call the police. I apologize for speculating on a message board

14 y.o. is fine babysitting, sure. Not when the kid is doing online classes/other activity herself. 4 younger kids need fully attentive supervision. That is bad parental decision making.

The prison time thing is absurd.

Helicopter parenting is a disease that needs to be culled.

How is it that so many current adults that had way more freedom as kids currently think their upbringing as horrible and dangerous?

I got in trouble as a kid for staying inside and not playing, and now we punish those who do, figures.

At 14, many people started legitimately babysitting by that age. Not to mention, the oldest boy look like he's old enough to look after himself as well.

She should have never been arrested.

Our neighbor has a 5 year old that gets out all the time and often if he sees me and my son playing he'll join in. Calling the cops is the last thing I thought to do.

bullshite case. My late 30's neighbor's kid funs off from the house often. He runs all over the neighborhood and he is 4 or 5.

I know it was a different time, but my mother basically raised her younger siblings and neighbors kids while all the parents were out in the fields working. She started doing that around age 6. She's currently 72.
