I'm no scientist and the only science courses I took in college were Geology courses.

BUT....isn't the only (or at least, the BEST) way to really show if the vaccine works is to purposefully expose these participants to the virus?

You would think that they would look for participants with the lowest at-risk potential, LIKE COLLEGE STUDENTS, and purposefully expose them to see if the vaccine works.

In addition to this, the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine signed like $250 million dollars worth of deals with Emergent (Baltimore based) to produce vaccines. US govt already gave Emergent more than half a billion dollars to expand capacity to produce vaccines.

CNBC said the 45 participants in phase 2, 40 were white and 5 blacks.

I believe this one is a more traditional vaccine, not the mRNA one like Moderna that is a new style.

Well, yeah. How else is this administration going to bribe Big Pharma to "lower" insulin and other hot button Rx prices?

It violates just about every ethical standard in scientific research to purposefully expose humans to disease.

I can’t find the article where I read it awhile back but it’s my understanding when surveying for participants they’re looking for people who will be exposed to higher viral loads to participate. Healthcare workers, those working with the public, etc.

Exactly.
They are already crying that cutting unemployment is "sending people to their deaths".

The fact that Amazon, grocery workers, manufacturing workers etc haven't stopped working is beyond them I suppose.

Talk about a lose-lose.

No matter how they conduct these tests, it will be called racist.

More whites -- Trump doesn't care about black people and blacks should comprise at least half of the participants.

More blacks -- Trump is a racist because he's using blacks as guinea pigs.

And, the fact that Trump has absof*ckinglutely nothing to do with it will not stop them from putting it all on Trump no matter how the tests are conducted.

Not if they select people who are already being readily exposed due to their current job or lifestyle. That’s well within ethics standards for these kind of studies.

There is a difference between using people who may be naturally exposed and intentionally giving it to them.

You can't intentionally give a prostitute gonorrhea to see how a treatment works, just because her lifestyle already readily exposes her to it.

Even if the group has less than a .04% chance of getting really sick or exhibiting any symptoms whatsoever, AND, they will be under doctor's care and evaluation the entire time?

The Oxford vaccine has elicited side effects in 60%+ of patients, but they're mild (headaches mostly and fever in about 15%) and usually go away pretty quickly, so they're looking into possibly going for the 2 dose method similar to the Moderna vaccine or just supplementing it with Tylenol.

It's fascinating to me how quickly these are getting done. If they're successful, these men and women deserve to eat and drink for free for the rest of their lives. Mind blowing shite.

Realistically they would be ok, but it's an ethical nightmare. That's why they've just chosen places where it's more likely that they'll be exposed.

You can ethically have a participant that is already regularly exposed to the virus (like a healthcare worker).

You can’t ethically give someone the vaccine trial and then stick them in a room with COVID-19 positive subjects to force exposure.

Which is exactly what I was saying in response to the person who suggested we should "purposefully expose them to see if the vaccine works."

it's not RNA based but it is still experimental

quote:

AZD1222, which was developed by researchers at Oxford’s Jenner Institute, works differently, by using a genetically engineered virus, called adenovirus, which was taken from chimps and modified not to replicate and sicken people. It carries a gene for one of the proteins in SARS-Cov-2 and inserts it into a recipient’s cells. The virus causes the patient’s cells to make that protein, which is then recognized by the immune system as foreign. This results in an immune response.

The platform has not been used in an approved vaccine. But it has been used in experimental vaccines against the viruses that cause other outbreaks, including the Ebola virus and the virus that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). That work left the Oxford group ready when SARS-CoV-2, a related virus, became a threat.
