Does anyone know if the New Orleans RR club is still active? Went about 10-15 years ago a few times w/ a friend, and their setup is very nice.

This thread reminds me of the “Jo on rails” craiglist ad where he talks about playing with model trains and touching each other, but he is not gay!!! then they can stomp on the trains like a monster. Afterwards they can eat imitation crab meat together

Have you checked out the huge train garden at New Orleans City Park?

My grandpa had a big O gauge setup in his attic a long time ago. All of his trains and tracks wound up getting passed down to me but I have no where to set them up. I had to get the locomotives serviced a couple of years ago so they all run great but unfortunately a lot of the buildings and specialty pieces have fallen apart over the years. I typically do a little track setup for Christmas around the tree but with a 2 year old in the house we had to hold off on that this year.

Where I'm at now, is thinking about getting a set of Army Painter paints and pre-made washes (everything comes in droppers with bbs), and start with that.

That’s what I did. Ha. Bought their first two D&D sets, then went from there.

Be patient on your skills.
Decide how “skillful” and “perfect” you want to go in the hobby.
Learn when to stop (diminishing return & constantly making and correcting mistakes in the pursuit of “perfection.”)
Clean your minis, prime (usually), basecoat, wash/shade, highlight.
Drybrushing is a fine technique after shading that works wonders.
Use varnish to protect your paint jobs.

YouTube is a big help, but don’t get caught up in how good people are. You’re probably not aiming for competition or show pieces. Tabletop ready is good enough.

I've never tried model railroading, but I've railroaded your mom before.

(Sorry, I had to say it. I have to help the OT maintain its low standards)

I've gotten into diorama building recently. 1:12 scale. It's awesome.

The idea of just collecting/building clean looking model railcars and towns doesn't appeal to me, really. However, when you look at some of the really good weathered, aged, and tagged cars and town scenes, that is pretty cool.

If I started doing it, it would be with an eye towards that end. You could incorporate both collecting and model building/painting and really broaden the hobby. Plus, who has ever seen a clean-looking boxcar?
