Good but who the frick cares about Mobile if you live on the eastern shore. Unless you work there....

They projected revenues of $55M per year. I can’t remember the exact number of years, but the initial tolling was to last between 40 and 60 years.

What is the cost of the new bridge construction?

Good god, how much were they planning on this thing costing? The CCC was literal highway robbery as the time to pay the bridge past by and the tolls stayed. Just like the pig, the government ate that money up, and absolutely did not want the spigot turned off.

Over $2B.
That’s a lot.
Was the new bridge supposed to span the entire bay or just the canal?

The bay and a good bit onshore in Mobile to clear their bull shite

Eh. They need that bridge. They just need it without the 25% surcharge for political croneyism and no show jobs
Toll goes to repay the cost of building the bridge and maintenance. 3P partnerships. This is very common and it’s how you pay for mega projects without raising taxes.

Tolls are always stupid on interstates. Are you telling me we don't have enough money in the Federal budget for building infrastructure? How about not sending all the bull shite money overseas and corporate welfare? Tolls are nothing but petty cash for local government officials. Look at the Causeway Commission.

That’s not just bridge cost. It’s the approaches, demo/sealing of the existing tunnel, multiple surface street improvements, mass earthwork, tie-ins. Just look at everything that is around a major river crossing. That all has to be developed to support the bridge.

Wasn't this a sure thing a few months ago? I remember talking to a guy from a construction company who was claiming to be working on a bid for it.

Probably not. Every state has multiple billion dollar projects in the works. Each want a piece of the pie.

Different issue. I’m not disagreeing with you, though.

Well, LA is full of corruption. But, tolls have an intended purpose. Corrupt government will find its way in, if you let it, however. The intent and contract for tolls are very clear....but then you have what you had on the CCC.

Sort of. It was in a holding pattern last I heard.

There is a lot of mis information in this thread. I’ll give you all the facts.
1. Tolls would be placed on the new bridge and the existing I-10 Tunnel. Depending on how long you stayed on the new bridge/bayWay would determine how much you paid (up to 6$).
2. Free routes would include the Bankhead tunnel and the africatown bridge and then the causeway. If you got on the bayWay after these you would still be tolled for how far you rode on the bayWay.
3. The project got overinflated for 2 main reasons.
A. The DOT claimed the existing bayway had to be torn down and built 10 feet higher due to federal regulations (this was determined to be a lie and was only a suggestion by a 3rd party who advises the govt)
B. The bridge was to be built 215 ft high. Which was way higher than the port authority said it needed to be. They came to that number from the cruise ship commission. 215 feet is the height necessary for the LARGEST CRUISE SHIP IN THE WORLD. (Which is absurd since Mobile can barely hang on to that shitty carnival fantasy boat)
It is a good damn thing this project is dying. 25 years of planning and the DOT comes at us with this garbage arse bullshite. John Cooper, The Head of the ALDOT should be tarred and feathered and forced to resign. He is an a-hole of epic proportions.

Mee maw does what the frick mee maw wants. It’s a good thing she isn’t running for re election after she rammed the gas tax thru and then tried to ram the I10 bridge thru as well. Especially considering we couldn’t get a lottery done either.

But that takes you to the Causeway so you would still have to pay the toll to get across the bay(if its true the Causeway was going to be tolled. I hadn't heard that). But Im glad it's canceled. frick that old hag of a governor. She fricked us on the gas tax and tried to frick us on this toll bridge
She’s also trying to frick y’all out of passenger rail.
