It's insane but this is now politics in the social media driven world. Rhetoric, mistruths, and mindless platitudes are what count now. Sorry, but I think the left is responsible for this chaos.

"Perception is reality" politics have been in force for decades, it's just now, that those who buy into this from the legacy media, actually get to reveal themselves to thousands by means of social media. The legacy media have not been THIS blatant for a long time.
The narratives they drive, the actions they drive (Trump being investigated, Antifa, Bernie supporter attempting to assassinate Republicans) are now beyond the pale, and instead of stepping back from the vitriol, it MUST BE accomplishing what they want, because the press and the Dems. have not mediated one iota.
