That’s what I was coming here to ask. You would think that would be part of the story.

Probably just tired of his wife's shite.

Not likely. Sadly, his kids will live through the trauma of their father never coming home.

While I agree, I also think you need to be smarter about the hikes you take. This sounds like an extreme hike, so it is a bit selfish in that regard.
Long hard effort at high altitude coming from sea level is risky.

These are the mountains in the Longmire books

Hiking alone is not some crazy dangerous exercise.
It is when it involvs summitting a 13k ft mountain.

I love the outdoors. Hunting fishing hiking camping
I love hunting alone walking the swamp here in louisiana. Helps clear my mind. Very relaxing.
Hiking the smokies and the Rockies is an also very relaxing but my ole lady and I do this. She as well loves camping backpacking hiking.
Driving in down secluded dirt roads over an hour then hiking on past where you park for another 5 or 10 miles really puts you way out from help.
Carrying a gps InReach emergency communicator is important. Also carry my gun. As relaxing as it is out there, one simple mishap can be what at home a no big deal, a huge deal that far out.
Turning an ankle on a fall, bad cut, or even getting sick for some in known reason could put you in a bad spot.
Long story but we were very close to a bad situation once with ten miles to hike out. Wound up in hospital once we got back to main campground.
Although you will run into someone eventually on most trails, this is not always the case. Being alone this far from help can be dangerous.

I'm sorry, but hiking solo when you have a family, especially young kids at home, is selfish and stupid
I agree with you and I love to hike, but you should always do it tandem. And never hike from dusk on. That's what this situation sounds like. He made it to the summit, it was pushing dusk, he was obviously exhausted, and he turned back to start going down and he obviously went over the side of the mountain or lost the trail and became grizzly meat.

C'mon, it's not like he was making flying squirrel videos.

Kind of shocked they haven’t found him yet. I would have assumed he fell off the ridge while navigating the boulder field directly before/after the summit. Maybe he made it down though.

Joe Pickett will find him

I almost drowned packrafting a class iv in Montana when our first son was under a year old. That was a huge wake-up call about risks with a family. Now I just spend every waking hour trying to keep our boys from killing themselves and others.

Very first thought. I didn’t like CJ Box much at first, and the TV adaptations are truly terrible. But I got hooked on Joe Pickett. I have a couple left to finish the series.

There is a New Jersey man missing in the Grand Canyon area, too.

Didn’t read the thread, but any chance this guy may have chosen to go missing?
This would be one way to throw your wife off the trail

I read a book called Death in the Grand Canyon earlier this year, and its amazing how many people hike down into the Grand Canyon in the summer woefully unprepared, and end up dying. Great book btw, highly recommend.
