So you're telling me I would get to have a mini data center installed in my home that I would have to pay for the additional electricity for and most likely additional water for cooling, in addition to any other local fees that my municipality tacks on plus a subscription to the AI service itself so that the large AI data companies can bypass construction costs and state and local regulations and taxes on their own data centers? Sounds like a great deal...
The worst part is that thousands of tech bros are probably going to sign up for this shite because "this is the future, man". We're about two steps away from full blown dystopia and we deserve every bit of it

A Span spokesperson told Realtor.com that these mini data centers could also save consumers money since Span “will take on paying the host’s electricity and internet bills directly, and charge a flat fee every month that’s much lower than what the host would otherwise pay to their electric utility and internet service provider.” However, the spokesperson added that “the exact arrangement will vary from one neighborhood or region to the next.”

"Much lower than what the host would otherwise pay". Sure, at first.
In the same way that streaming services were "much lower than the cost of cable". Until you have to have a monthly subscription to watch every fricking show.
The cost per token for AI tools is much lower than the cost of employing an individual. Until they have the market, then they raise the cost of tokens.
Its the same shite over and over again, yet consumers are dumb enough to keep falling for it. These companies will look you in the face and convince you that their profit is your profit. Meanwhile, they rake in billions and the consumers are left wandering why they're short on their mortgage (or rent most likely) this month

I saw an X add for this and it claimed that they would pay YOU every month up to $1,000 per month to host the data center. The community notes below set it straight that you would pay THEM about $150 per month and would not receive any money from the company.
How is it legal to advertise a bold faced lie?

Each containing 3TB of DDR5 RAM with a street value of $250K.... not to mention the CPU/GPU's.
These things would evaporate. The anti-theft measures will be ignored or defeated in seconds by the thieves.
In the positive side, DDR5 would flood the secondary market.

sounds about as stellar of an idea as when comcast enabled 'public network' wifi access by default on all installed home routers.

Sounds like the scam of bitcoin mining and installing solar panels on your roof.

my pseudo BIL is a techie that ran early with the now-big names in the PC startups. He now designs set-top cable tv tuners, and has held the vision for many years to use all those tuners (micro-processors) that are dormant most of the day and are already networked as the worlds largest computer. This sounds like his plan on steroids.

Pretty soon we’ll be offered ultra mini data centers for our cars, cell phones, toasters, microwaves etc.

Germans, but
Why don't these data centers go in abandoned grocery stores, old walmarts, abandoned malls, etc, instead of using good farm land?

Bon Carré Technology Park in Baton Rouge is a case study of two forces reshaping commercial real estate: the long decline of shopping malls and the rapid rise of data centers.
The 712,000-sq.-ft. site on Florida Boulevard in Louisiana’s capital city has changed hands several times since the Bon Marché Mall closed in 1990. In recent years, under tech-focused real estate firm EdgePWR’s ownership, the site has undergone a major transformation. Its new identity centers on data centers, offices and technology-focused tenants.

Too much competition from Party City

It happens but its not as common because these centers require large amounts of cooling and energy. Add in large generators and other items needed to keep the center up and running and it gets pretty expensive to try to retrofit an existing building. Thats why most have gone the route of buying cheap farm land and starting from scratch

I had span pitch this to us the other day. Their electrical consumption and reimbursement assumptions are so insanely off it borders on insanity.

They do when it makes sense but a lot of those abandoned places are in high population areas that have expensive utilities and if they can’t beat down the utility rates they go to bfe where they can.

Ready Player One.
Good flick. Imaginary tale of possible outcomes of this.
