Where is this 20% standard crap?

It was always 15% for standard service and 20% if very good service.

When did they get a raise?

No, it is the business’ job to pay their wages.

They wouldn’t be called tips if what you are saying is true. They would be called their “paycheck”.

How about you support them being paid minimum wage, rather than shifting the employer’s responsibility onto the consumer.

It would be a great system if everyone worked it properly. Get outstanding service maybe tip 30%. Crappy service 5%. I do 20% always though so I’m part of the problem.

Maybe they shouldn't be eating out at all then.

Everyone knows waiters and waitresses may about $2 an hour and people have to tip them. And 20% is standard. If they were paid a normal wage without tipping the food would cost more.

Basically by not tipping, your stealing from others as others are subsidizing your meal.

Ftr, I dont tip any exact amount and I eat out 10+ times a week. I just make sure I tip 20% then round up to the nearest dollar or leave an extra dollar or 2 on top of the 20%. So I average 22-25% I would estimate.

I’m not about to read everything going on this thread, but I will state the tip moving up to 18-20% is bullshite because the 15% is going to move in proportion with the inflation cost of food/drinks.

When did 20% become standard? Waiter/waitress should work hard to earn it.

Part of the problem is that 15% used to be standard, then 18%, now it's 20%?

There should be no reason for increasing tip percentage over time. Prices go up, so the tip at the same rate still goes up in dollars.

Charge me what I owe you for the meal and pay your damn employees. I'll still tip a few bucks for good service.

Why would you think I am talking about people that tip properly?

I am talking about people defending themselves not tipping properly.

Unless the server is just plain rude I always tip atleast 20%. Otherwise you shouldn’t go out to eat.

Sounds like Millennials are doing society a favor by changing the tipping expectations. Used to be 15%, then 18%, now 20% is expected.

What restaurants are you going to that make you sign an employment contract with the waitstaff?

If a restaurant has to depend on my tips to stay open there are bigger problems at work.

Why are waiters and waitresses tipped for doing their everyday job again?

the standard 20 percent suggestion

I'm a millennial and I always tip at least 20% (calculate 20% and round up) but it's bullshite to consider this the standard amount. I thought it was 16% with 20% being considered generous.

At restaurants for large parties they often build in 18%.
