Its a bit of both worlds - if you get ton of vacation time and a not much money its tough to take vacations. That said, if you get tons of money and minimal vacation then it is a lot harder to enjoy your vacation time.

I think i'm a millennial (Born in 89) and I get 1099'd so i get to take a lot of vacation times but will work on weekends leading up and will usually not totally check out and will work on some mornings while gone.

This obviously depends on the situation. If I was just starting out, I'd want the highest salary possible. But, there is a certain time where time off > salary.

If it was between a 5k raise and an extra week of vacation, I'd take the vacation.

I can believe that. I know a lot of people who are big on vacations. Personally, I'd rather the money right now. I have 17 days of vacation a year and YTD I've used 2 or 3 of them. I can only roll over 5 days, so I'll be taking vacation time for the hell of it.

Must be why education has a glut of qualified applicants right now.

I can't speak to the motivation of all the people in the generation, but I think this is probably due to changes over the years in how big companies handle salaries in general. Negotiation over salary, at least in my industry, is pretty tight. There are well defined roles and each role pays roughly what it pays. You aren't really gonna have a big pay range between people with the same title within a company. You make more money through advancing, not by bugging your boss for a raise. PTO on the other hand is still pretty flexible and varies from company to company, so it never hurts to bring it up. I would guess most millennials have grown up with things this way and don't know any different.

The frick? I graduated this year and I'll work 300 weeks straight if it meant making 6 figs right now. Now down the line after I have a family and everything that would obviously change but right now my focus is to make the later stages of my life as easy as possible. Maybe I'm the minority tho.

It's possibly true for me, as long as my salary allows me to live comfortably and I have enough extra cash to take vacations.

It's all about context IMO. If you asked me today would I rather a 7% raise or an extra week of vacation, I am taking the time off. It could be the fact that I am bored to tears most days so I look forward to my weekends and vacations. The cost of living is low in my area and my wife (no pics) makes more than I do so I am also taking that into account.

In my case, false (though I do get a ton of vacation time anyway).

absolutely

This. What's the point of making money if you can't go on a nice vacation to enjoy it?

ETA: I'm speaking from the point of only having 10 days all year which includes sick and personal time :( we do get holidays off and stuff, but still 10 days goes by very quickly.

Never get paid in benefits. Those are always the first to get cut.

I wonder if he/she meant millenials are more motivated by vacation my time than their older peers.

Either way it makes some sense given that they are less likely to have families, mortgages, etc., take take top priority and make vacation time less feasible anyways.

I'm wrestling with this very dilemma right now. I think as time goes on I will opt for the career track that affords more time off. It will allow me to pursue other avenues of revenue as my profession has relatively stagnant salaries once you start.

All threads have been posted before. Literally everything that can be discussed on the OT has in fact already been hashed and rehashed. Just be glad this isn't another thread on proper arse wiping technique.
