I just recently left a job that had unlimited PTO for one that paid more, but then again, I'm not a millenial.

I've never been offered a position at a company that provided unlimited PTO as a perk, but I'd be extremely wary if I ever were.

PTO is more about office culture and environment than it is about the policy written on paper. I'd rather be given exactly X days of PTO, and feel I can use them however I damn well please without being made to feel guilty about being out of the office.

Some companies may say you get unlimited PTO, but then people are frowned upon "off the record" for taking time off, even though they are getting their work done. I'd hate being in that kind of environment and feeling like I've got to walk on eggshells regarding PTO.

I'm 40 years old now and I've been working since I was 15 years old. At this point in my life, I would gladly accept more vacation time versus an increase in my salary. I'm tired of working. Every single day it's the same damn routine.

Notbthis company. They really have a very pro-employee atmosphere. It was a great company where most in the area where I worked were being promoted after just one year. I would have stayed there, but I received an offer I couldn't refuse. Plus I used the unlimited PTO aspect to leverage an additional week of vacation at the new job.

Agreed 100%. At my current company, we don't carry vacation days over from one year to the next, which means that we're all expected to take our maximum allotted vacation days. I prefer it that way.

At the company I just left, everyone was required to take a minimum of 3 weeks of vacation to go along with the 11 holidays per year. Most took more.

If you are in the middle of a project and it is really busy then you don't take off. If it is at a point when nothing will slow down if you are not there and you take off.. And someone has a problem with it. That's on them. I think people should be able to decide when they want to use their time off.

After living in Europe for 6 years, I'm pretty much useless to the US job market. 10 days holiday, ah hell nah.

Don't really see the problem here.

I make slightly below average for PAs but I have so much vacation and sick leave that I never come close to using it all. I'd rather have it when I need it over making an extra $10k.

Once had a manager tell me that weekends counted as full days for vacation time pay.

After that I stopped recording and getting approval for vacation time. frick that guy.

I would easily take more vacation time over a pay raise. I make enough now; working less is more valuable than anything they can pay me.

In an ideal world, I completely agree.

But there are some people whose identity is comprised entirely of their professional aspirations, and will run themselves ragged by the age of 40 just to advance up the ladder.

If you are unlucky enough to work with/for people like that, you can see how - regardless of the quality of work you're producing - taking more time off than others can brand you with a scarlet letter.

at all the people here bragging about not taking much vacation time. I'll never understand that mindset.

In what realm is that a badge of honor?

Sure having good work ethic is a quality trait, but if you're doing what you need to do to be a productive member of society, and providing for your dependents, take as much time as you want off.

There's one thing in this life you absolutely cannot get more of, that's time. When you're on your death bed and your time is finally up, are you going to tell your loved ones "I just wish I had some more money."?

You said taking more time off than others brands you with the scarlet letter.

I have seen the absolute opposite. High producers are kept on with the idea that they do what others do in less time.
