I gotcha. Yes, I've seen that too.

What I was saying is that there are people who will judge you - regardless of your productivity - simply because you're not "on the clock."

It sucks to work with/for people like that. That's what I meant in regards to being wary about companies saying they allow unlimited PTO. They may say that, but when push comes to shove, they don't actually expect anyone to take advantage of it.

Not all of them of course. I know folks who work for companies who do indeed mean it when they say "unlimited PTO"

At the company I just left, everyone was required to take a minimum of 3 weeks of vacation to go along with the 11 holidays per year. Most took more.

Why the hell would you leave? That sounds amazing

I don't know that this has as much to do with the "millenial" mindset as it does with the current age range of millenials.

From my mid 20s into my early 30s I definitely would have taken more time off over more pay. I even had one job that gave the choice of 1.5x OT pay or 1:1 comp time whenever we broke 40... I always took the comp until I had a few extra weeks built up. I had less expenses, less responsibilities, and I traveled a lot more at that point in my life.

Now, in my late 30s, I would take more money for sure. I also have worked up to getting more time off annually than I used to.

I am the only "millinial" in my position at work. I'm negotiating for a new position and 11 extra vacay days are offered; PTO or Payout. No millinials, all take the vacation time.

Didn't realize you were that much younger than me. I am admittedly the very end of Gen X

Why are you proud of this?

I mean the two things kind of go hand in hand...you can't really have a good vacation if you're not making a good salary...just my opinion.

I'm really not. I will have the opportunity to buy the business in a few years and guess I just don't like being away too much.

Damn I need to get less friends. I have taken off 8 days this year for bachelor parties alone.

It's been part of how I factor any job offer. Along with 401K matching, bonus and stock options, insurance options, as well as specifics for PTO an holiday pay, can you sell back vacation time if you don't use it, etc.

As you get older, time off with the family becomes more important, so I would think people in my age place more importance on that than millennials (I'm 55).

I'm with the Millennials on this one. What good is more money if you don't have the time to enjoy it?

In my case, sorta. I could us 5 more days off over a 3% raise.

Weddings occupy 80% of my PTO

Maybe you should stop getting married.

Same here.

But I'll negotiate for more PTO. It's easier for most company's to wiggle a little on that.

The place I'm with now let's you cash in 40 vacation hours, allows you to roll over 40 more. Plus, they let employees accrue sick time until you hit 160 hours of that, then they just cash in whatever you have over that.

New hire is allotted 80 hours of vacation and 40 hours of sick time. After 2 years you receive an extra 20 hours of vacation a year.

It's awesome for a young single guy like me. I'm not planning on using any vacation time my first year. I'll get an extra paycheck this year, an extra week of vacation next year.
And I negotiated to get bumped to the 2 year loyalty pto program.

All in all I'd say that I won. Sure I'll work my dick off for a little bit. But that poor fricker needs to recuperate after 6 years of slutting it up in college.

This entire question will be informed by where the person is with both. Someone making 40k probably wants more money, someone makimg 90k probably wants more time off.

I actually took other benefits in lieu of more money.. keeps me out of the next tax bracket. I already have 6 weeks pto plus holidays. I also make a decent wage.. so things like providing money for further education, child care, lower healthcare costs, flexible hours, paid paternity leave, work environment, stress reduction are all more valuable than a few extra grand that uncle sam will eat anyway.
