Two kids under 4, both in daycare (this shite sucks dollar-wise, but it is what it is)
Own our home 15 minutes from Denver, bought in 2018 and have done nice upgrades each year since
Great jobs, both my wife and I. Well compensated, generous 401k, no traveling anymore.
Life is pretty sweet honestly. Yeah I had to bust my arse in my mid to late twenties, but really doing better than I could have hoped.

Well let's see
I worked two jobs to put myself through college and got a degree in engineering. My mom was a single parent making less than 35k a year so I had to do it myself.
I graduated on a Friday and went to work the following Monday. I lived in a shitty ran down apartment an hour away from my work for 2 years and saved my money. I did side jobs and hustled. I hunt and fished for most of my protein, I'd buy gift cards to Walmart to save $0.05/gallon when I got gas.
I saved snd spent it all buying a house after saving a few years in 2017. I went all in.
I spent the next 2 years completely remodeling it by myself.
I sold it at the height of the market and walked away with 97k in cash.
We had our first baby in that house.
We did the exact same thing with another home and walked away with $56k more
Then I bought a rental home and had more kids.
Now I've got 2 rental house, a home on a couple of acres, a small regional home building company (not doing great right now but I saved for the hard times) and 3 beautiful children.
I'm 31.
It's not impossible but the reality is - I sacrificed my 20's for this.
I have buddies who constantly went to music festivals, hunting and fishing trips, European vacations, don't know what a 401k is and always are complaining about being broke and renting.
Time will tell who made the right decisions but blaming a lack of success on the rest of the world is pussy shite imo.

young folks today really do have a lot of shite thrust upon them due to no control of their own, but the above is a copout. You absolutely most certainly can save if you actually desire to. Blaming inflation for poor financial habits is a bad excuse.
Everyone needs some discretionary spending. Makes it harder to save, but you have to have some fun in life.

When I was 33 I had a 2011 chevy malibu. I purchased it cheap and it's easy to maintain. I'm 38 and still have the same car. I also had it when I was 28.

How far was your commute?
Not too bad, abotu 15 minutes. Many young people (not you specifcially, just in general) watn the glitz and glamor of livign downtown while not realizing that if they lived 20 minutes out of town their rent would slash in half

A phone is a necessity at this stage of the world
A phone, yes.
An iphone 13? No. I've had a cell phone my whole life and have never paid more than $120 for one. if you are having to make monthly payments on a cell phone, you're doing something wrong.

Based on what you said , a 33 year old should live in a studio with 2 people, don’t have a phone and therefore email everything, own a 2k car that costs 4K to fix in a month, and commute 2 hours each way

hyperbole much? I don't know anythign at all about the made up person in this hypothetical situation but isntead of being defensive and ridiculous, you coudl jsut oh idk....eat out a few times less per week which woudl free up another few hundred bucks a month to save. Not sure why you've taken it as such a personal offense.

You need to get a wife that can earn the same as you. Trust me, marrying for love ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.

I work with some guys that say they can’t save like me but at the same time buy $4 energy drinks every day, and buy breakfasts and lunch a few times a week.
exactly. The whole "it's impossible for me to save" is jsut nonsense considering you could cut out 5 bucks here or 20 bucks there over the course of a week. Compound that over a full y ear and there are thousands in savings that can be had if you actually have a mind to. That doesn't mean you have to ride a scooter and eat bread and water for every meal.

My rent is about 17-20% of my gross income
I'm a gen-x'er (I'm 48) and I just recently moved to a new area and I decided to rent until the housing market looks a little better.
My rent is only 13% of my gross. This allows me to save what I need for retirement, enjoy a few nice vacations, eat out if we feel like it, etc.
I'll never understand the people who make decent money and still spend 40-50% on rent or mortgage payments...

Dual incomes being commonplace is part of the whole problem. It should not be a major feat for someone to earn enough for a family to live fairly on a single income.
I make a lot of money for someone my age and it's not easy to do. Kids being raised from birth by daycare is not a good thing.

I talked to a younger millennial baw at work yesterday. He said he's desperate for a new roommate. He has a 3 bedroom apartment that he pays around $2400 a month for. I let him know my 3 bedroom house of 7 years has a $1000 mortgage. He had such a sad face that I didn't want to bring up the $165K I have in equity.
