When I was in my mid twenties, my wife (no pics) and I rented a house that was so unlevel, that a pencil would roll off the kitchen table

Eventually we became more solvent. It will work out for you too.

Even my friends that do not have degrees are making 60-80k a year. Everyone I know with a degree is making 6 figures.

My dad makes like 70k working as stock manager for a big box store

I'm close to 200k adding in bonuses, wife is well into 6 figures with her bonuses included.

First job out of college in 2010 I made 40k a year and still managed to purchase a starter home.

Ok, what is your age and where was this house so we can see what it would cost nowadays.

Upper end of the age range, but we are 5 years into “real” jobs, live in a house worth 1x our current annual income, have no debt that isn’t the mortgage, retirement accounts + investments currently right about 1x of household annual income (majority in Roth retirement accounts). Driving 6 and 8 year old cars. Have an older ‘fun’ car. 3m expenses are in an emergency fund (really just our checking account).

I make my coffee at home.

The real struggle is cars. They’re awfully expensive, and they make it difficult to plan. We just finished paying off the loans. Next goal is to add a pretty average new car’s worth of money into the emergency fund. It’s a conservative strategy, and it will stifle growth to some extent, but I’ll sleep better at night.

Overall, I can’t complain. But I see how it would be very easy to get into trouble fast.

Maybe you were being sarcastic about beans... if not, then I'm confused.

This is a common bias. I can say everyone around me makes 500k but if I’m a doctor, that makes sense. This is why we look at distribution of incomes overall, not just our social circles

You are certainly confused

RBR with sausage is a cheap easy meal to make that can last a couple of days

I’m not poor but I might be cheap

I'm using my social circle as an example as I know people that have degrees and those without.

One guy I know is a cabinet maker/installer.he makes more than I do

Same, and my dad worked a normal blue collar job with some overtime. He worked hard and earned it, and missed a holiday or a baseball game here and there, but it's not like he had to sacrifice his relationship with his family to do it.

These days, shittttttttt. Aint gonna happen. If I had his job right now, we'd have to be living in the trashiest trailer park in existence to swing it on a single check.

It's fricking hard out here with a young family and the people 10 years younger than me have it even worse.

Housing index for Greensboro, NC. I'm guessing this graph isn't a good thing for homebuyers? Really ramps up after 2020 doesn't it??

Only debt is the house. We can afford the things we need just not a whole lot of what we want. God will provide.
