Bought my first house at 26. Married for 3 years at that point and we busted our asses and saved to afford it.

Indeed. We were concerned about how almost all of the public schools in Phoenix were crap. Charter or private are the only real options.
Of course, we were ready to settle in Big Fun Ahwatukee. Living in a converted retirement community has its perks.

Public school can still be an option out here though. I'm not saying PHX metro has the best schools in the nation cause they do not. But you can easily find an area in the metro area to move to that has a decent public school district, whether you prefer east or west valley suburbs or staying in city of PHX.
It's not like BR...where people factor in private school costs as a necessity and not as just an option for education.

it's the biggest gripe millennials have about this housing stuff, and a lot people completely dismiss it
sure, you can get a house for a reasonable price; but you're probably going to pay more and/or have a shitty commute if you don't want your kids to be stabbed in the bathroom

That $40,000 house didn’t have wood floor, granite counter tops, a double oven, or whatever other frivolous upgrades every new house today has.
I’ve done quite well at 33. We got a house at 28 and it was a good decision because we are able to keep from moving. If we jumped to a new house every few years, renting would be better financially in the long term.
These people don’t even know why they want a house. They’re just parroting what they’re told. If you move more than ONCE in that 30 year span that you own and restart that mortgage, you just put yourself behind people who rent. Take the money you put into a down payment and invest it.

This is not a brag but the county that I live in has the best public schools in the state of Florida. My wife is a closing coordinator for a home builder out here and the number one reason young families move to my area is the beaches and the schools. The home values out here are crazy because of the schools I moved here just for the investment and the beaches.

We have people from all over the country moving here. We have a weekly driveway gathering and there are people from Seattle, New York, California etc.moving out of the really expensive markets getting double the size house for half the price and the best schools. There is a reason this area is the #3 ranked communities to live in in the whole US. It keeps growing and so does my property value

I'm a millennial, but I guess due to being educated and white collar, I just don't encounter the idiots of my generation that are highlighted in these broadly applied articles and comments. I don't really know anyone in my peer group that doesn't save for retirement, make well above the average household income, or generally complain about the lack of opportunity.

A friend had the nerve to point out how much I spent on a toy the other day. Made a comment that I had more money than I know what to do with.
I pointed out he makes three times what I make.
But where as he has a brand new 80k truck, his wife a brand new car, toys, and a house note. I buy used vehicles. I drive them into the ground. And I side hustle as much cash as I can.
I probably have 10x the amount of emergency cash in my safe that they have to their name.
Nothing to do with privelege or inherited wealth. Everything to do that I accept the limitations of my current income and do everything I can to live within even more strict limitations.
And if I decide to splurge, I don't make it a habit.
