This post shows you know absolutely nothing about owning rental property

You can’t make blanketed statements like that and expect people to agree. Every person and every property will be a different decision. Theres a list of checkboxes you can make for yourself and it’s not as easy as “oh hey that 1500 bucks a month could be yours if you owned it.”

If that place costs 300k, congrats on a negative income statement from a renter.

What annoys me is that people are posting home prices based on a quick sort on realtor.com.

The cheapest homes in any area are usually cheap for a reason. They tend to have major flaws.

Someone said you can buy a decent house in BR for $165K.

You can't. It will be fricked up. Or it will be in the hood. It's cheap for a reason.

I’m good with renting for now.

I figure I’ll but in five years or so and have a huge downpayment. I could buy right now but really have no desire to

In a good area of BR, you can maybe start around 200-220k for a decent home in a decent area. For a first time home buyer or newly grad, there’s a good chance these are homes that still aren’t fully up to date or have basic updates. You can start to find brand new places around 220-250k for pretty well built homes. I look at this shite daily, have multiple rental properties, and have a very good idea of areas so I had to vehemently disagree with some here

Granted I don't know BRs market specifically, but that seems normal price for a city of that size. If not fairly cheap.

No, BR is cheap because it is an economic shithole.

The point is that you can't use zillow to understand how much it costs to buy a sensible starter house in most cities because it's going to show some cheap homes that have major underlying issues or bullets flying outside

250k gets you a pos in BR. You have to spend $375+ if you want something nice in the city. Can get a lot more house in Prairieville or Gonzales, but F commuting. I'm torn right now

Yeah like I said, you’ll be on the front end of basics most likely but for a starter home you can do it. There’s plenty of forever homes in the low 300’s if you’re wanting upgrades. You just have to know where to look and be on top of the market. Those homes go off the market in less than a week.

Not everyone wants to live in a place where the highest class establishment within 15 minutes is a longhorn steakhouse or P.F. Changs.

Some of you seem to think that outside about 5 or 6 major metropolitan areas the rest of the country is just a bunch of trailer parks, fast food joints, chains, gang warfare and buck toothed illiterates. You really all need to get out and explore a little more.

Not me. There are lots of nice cities in this country. And the ones with good jobs are not cheap. There are a few hidden gems but for the most part you get what you pay for

You know there is a lot of grey area between MIDDLE OF CITY and MIDDLE OF NOWHERE.

Seems to me every person ITT that is bitching about living expenses wants a big house in the middle of the city. NEWS frickING FLASH. THat has ALWAYS been expensive. That is because there is finite real estate. God forbid you have to commute half an hour to work.... some of your parents probably commuted HOURS. Live where you can afford, and stop crying that your life is so hard

I'm not the one wondering why someone would ever want to live in a city....
