This is my biggest problem with this subject. The people who behave as though not having access to a 150k awesome house in a downtown area of a really cool city is a violation of their civil rights. You want to live where the action is? Cool, but you are going to sacrifice things.

While there is something to this, there have been many brand new developments (new urban planning I think they call it) that have gone up across the country that have many of the features you are looking for.

The problem, which others have alluded to is that since these are new builds, and they tend to come with nicer finishes which drive up the price. Not to mention more expensive architectural, design and construction fees to build developments like this. The net result is just nicer stuff in suburbs that only rich people can afford.

I know what I have to do. I have saved almost $100k to buy a house. It's been hard work.

That’s awesome, great work I know a lot of sacrifice went into that.

I just look around and realize that we could do a much better job of housing the population.

True, but when it comes down to it, people choose where to live. There are also certain things you can’t plan for like major storms that displace people.

It’s kind of what the OP is about

I think that everyone should have somewhere to live that is affordable and manageable. It should be an intrinsic human right. The American dream is unattainable for the younger generations. If it’s this bad for us...what will happen with the kids coming of age soon?

No one gifted me my down payment, I worked hard, saved up while renting and placed 5% down on a "starter" home in an area I researched hard and thought would gentrify soon.

It did and my home has appreciated 30% in 3 years. I will sell soon for a bigger home that can fit children (have 1, will add more).

I also live in Nashville where home prices are much higher than most places in the South. You just have to be willing to live in something smaller in an area not as great at first.

The quotes in the OP from the article are pretty much implying this, so yes they are.

It is only the entire premise of this thread.

while stupid, that does not mean downtown living for 150k

Based on the finances of some of the people in question, sure it does. Most of the quotes in the OP are from people that want a nice home in the heart of some city, but can't afford more than 150k and want to blame someone else for it.

I don't know man

there are a ton of millennials that are put out with the world because their public admin degree and 100k in student loans didn't put them in a position to buy a loft and ride a Bird to work in their preferred section of the city

Do young people just ignore hard work and good decisions?

Not meant to criticize those of you who have stated you worked hard and started small to get where u are today and have what u have. Just for all the snotty nose winers who think the world owes them.

Millennials generally work longer hours, and take less vacation than gen x or boomers.

Millennials are also more likely to have and stick to a budget than older generations.

Thanks for proving my point. Your feelings disagree with the facts, so you and many like you just ignore them.

Speaking of making good decisions, I think the average boomer is about a year or two without a paycheck from living solely on the government dole. Glass houses and all that.

Ehh, we live in Louisiana, those type of houses and not so good neighborhoods are everywhere here. It's probably not that bad.

Millennials in general may be at work more hours, but don’t get more work done than my generation and those before me. You are probably at work right now wasting time posting.

As I did when I was younger.

You act as if these are things that millennials discovered.

Never said they discovered it.

The point is that the generalization that millennials aren't hardworking is based on feelings, not facts.

props to him!

im exactly the same, a 25 year old homeowner
i received plenty of support from my parents through college i would admit that, but i didn't let their money go to waste
after all, tuition at LSU wasn't much at all after TOPs, in fact housing was more expensive
i worked hard
excelled in my grades
got a very good paying job in an area that has honest housing prices
saved my money up
mortgage payment made more sense than an apartment payment
put a down payment on a house
