That was funny as a kid but looking back as an older man, Gorbachev had good intentions and HUGE balls to do what he did without being exiled or assassinated.

No. Anyone would have likely wound up in the same situation as Yeltsin. The damage of the legacy of Communism was going to take a long time to correct and Russia is still fricked because of it. In my mind, the only thing that he could have done differently would have been to kill Jewish Oligarchs and kill Chekists. In any chase the Chekists came to power and killed, exiled and arrested the Jewish Oligarchs. And here we are today.
