BATON ROUGE- Days after a fire on Government Street, suspicious circumstances linger surrounding the death of an official with the Mid City Redevelopment Alliance. Deputy Director John Carpenter was found in the backyard of a model townhome off of Government Street and Jefferson Highway Tuesday. He was severely burned and died the next day. The owner of the development under construction said he has never met Carpenter and the Mid City Redevelopment Alliance had no part in the project where homes sell for upwards of $330,000 per unit.

"What were you doing out here with my house and in my house?" Owner David Hebert asked. Hebert said whoever set the fire inside his townhome, used a landscape brick to force entry into the back door. He said fire investigators found matches around the property, and they believe an accelerant like gas was used to ignite it. Neighbors saw the flames and called the fire department after the fire erupted at the Old Goodwood Crossing townhomes around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived, Carpenter was injured so badly he could not talk. "Investigators are conducting interviews to determine why he was here, if anyone else was here with him or what have you," Robert Combs with the Baton Rouge Fire Department said. As of now, no one is living on the property as all units are currently vacant and are on sale from $250,000 to $332,000.

According to Hebert, Carpenter's car was parked in a strange manner adjacent to the unit that burned. It was backed up behind a fence that was not visible from the street. Carpenter would have needed to go through a closed gate to gain entry into the backyard.

Very common for arsonists to kill themselves like this. They watch the movie where people pour gas around and light it. Then throw a match on it. In reality, that ignites the fumes in the air and engulfs the whole room and the person instantly. I have seen demonstrations of this and it ain’t at all like the movies.

I live a few blocks away. I'm not saying wehether he was the arsonist or not, but where he was parked is not as out of a location as the article made it out to be...

Besides, it seems very strange to me that he wouldn't just hire a hatchet man for something like this...

That's why he was the Deputy Director.

EDIT: I remember the job posting for that position clearly stated that light arson was required.

I've had a little interaction with Mid City redevelopment alliance, but the people that I've had interaction with seems opposed to "whitey getting too gentrified down up in hurrr"

If you’re going to light a fire with an accelerator, do not use gasoline. The fumes are too light and you could possibly burn yourself up.

Maybe he was jogging and stopped for a drink of water.

Why would this report the incident was "on"/"off" Government? The fire was a block across from Towne Center... a block off Jefferson and Lobdell...much closer to Old Hammond, Corporate, Goodwood, etc... almost a mile from Government St.and the nearest listed mid-city merchant, yet they open the story up with a false report of, "a fire on Government St.".

Is this some kind of fake news effort to try and tie this "mid-city" director into some sort of "mid-city" internal sabotage to create appearance of scandal? Towne Center / Goodwood Crossing fire location is not considered in any part of Mid City nor is it on, off, or very near Government St. Makes little sense other than try to create scandal .

Is this David Hebert of the company/family that is notoriously corrupt?

There might be more here than meets the eye.

The fire was in the newly built complex on the north side of Government, at the intersection of Jefferson Hwy and Government. Next door to Fleur de Lis Pizza.

Why so defensive about the “Alliance”?

I wouldn't say corrupt, just really well connected.

It at least butts up against mid city. With the limited facts that are known now, it seems likely that his motivation could have been related to the goals of his employer. Since that type of organization commonly uses race pandering to extort money/property from developers, it is not much of a leap to imagine a white knight (or organized) attempt to teach an uncooperative developer a lesson.

Can you propose a more likely scenario for why this guy was involved in an arson at a place he had no other apparent connection to?

The only other explanation was that he was being murdered and framed to look like he started the fire that killed him rather than being kidnapped and having a fire started around him.

It literally happened across the street from the “Welcome to Mid City” sign on Jefferson where it meets Government. WTF are you talking about?

I think he’s confusing those condos for the new ones at Lobdell and Goodwood

I’m sure he’s confusing the development with another one with a similar name that is closer to Towne Center. But that confusion sure does make his “fake news to smear mid-city director” claim look ridiculous.
