We tend to get a winter precip event in North Texas in November - not of major consequence but it doesn't take much

The panhandle had 2 in October....

The GFS has a cold bias. There's going to be a lot of phantom events this winter. Until the Euro is on board, or at least close to being on board I wouldn't put much stock in it.

You'll never go broke betting against winter weather in S Louisiana, especially before Thanksgiving.

It's just the big picture pattern. Big high up near Alaska has been persistent and along with a few other things, has set up for cold air to pour down out of Canada and into the US.

This thing the GFS is seeing could be how it resolves that super typhoon recurves and alters the upper air patters way up in the N. Pacific and Arctic. This sort of thing can result in a big cold shot coming down our way in a couple of weeks.

The Euro, while not on board with any sort of winter weather, has a very cold shot of air coming down over the planes and into Texas in the 10 day range. It's enough of a signal, with the other models, to think next weekend could be pretty cold vs normal.

Cold air exists in the northern hemisphere from October to April. It just depends on if the jet stream allows it to go south. The pattern is currently set up to allow cold air down south.

If the pattern switches, which it often does, we won't get any cold air. These things tend to last 2-4 weeks.

The jet stream is basically a result of the temperature gradient between the tropics and the arctic. Stronger gradient, stronger jet stream.

It would make sense that after the west got all that snow and is staying cool, it is getting a little wavier and letting cold down to the east. Oversimplified explaination of course.
