Michigan clock-gate question

The defender is leaping up and touches the ball. His feet aren’t on the ground. They say the clock stops then?
What if he had batted it to a player in bounds while he was in the air? Would it still be out of bounds and no completion?
What if he just batted it in the air and it landed in bounds?
Shouldn’t the guys feet have to touch the ground while the ball is in his possession for the clock to stop?
Can someone explain this? What am I mistaken about?
Looks to me like his feet were still in the air when the refs said there was still one second on the clock.
I thought either the feet have to touch the ground or the ball for the clock to stop.

Since #18 for Western Michigan had already stepped out of bounds, the moment he touches the ball, the play ends, thus the clock will stop immediately. No one else could have caught it legally, even if they were in bounds.

So of another player who had not stepped out of bounds batted it away while still in the air then no time would have been added?
Basically if he knew it was going out of bounds he shouldn’t have touched it.

He jumped up from out of bounds. If he would’ve jumped from in bounds, the clock would’ve stopped

Yeah. The scoreboard clock should be the one that counts because that is what everyone sees including the coaches who make decisions based upon what the scoreboard clock says.
What if the scoreboard clock showed more time than the “official” unseen clock in another situation where it mattered the other way. The ref gonna say well actually they called the timeout too late even though they were looking at the scoreboard clock to decide when to call the timeout with 1 second left? Actually there was no time left to call your timeout. Sorry coach. You should be looking at our secret official clock.

There has been multiple videos come out that were taken in the stadium that show the scoreboard clock still showed 0:01 then the defender touched the ball. The error was an NBC issue.
I have a thread on MSB where I initially showed there SHOULD have been time on the clock now some of the videos are posted on the last page that show there was time on the stadium clock.

If he had not stepped out if bounds first, the clock would continue until either the ball hit the ground.
There is a plus in his trying to catch it....It kept a Michigan guy from catching it. So, he really did the right play...
