"skilled" workers don't have to stand out side of Home Depot for hire.

they don't stand around here looking for work but when I go to HD to look for a messcan for a job I go because they're there getting supplies for jobs, I look at their trucks to see what it is they do, talk to them a bit, doesn't take long to find some good workers there though

I stopped and had a group follow me to my business. They cleaned up a trash pile for me. They were very quick and thankful for the work.

I would NOT bring them to my house to do any work.

Do you realize that hiring these people is hurting Americans.

If there were Americans standing at Home Depot looking for work, I'd hire them first. Even at a higher payrate to keep that money in America.

But there aren't.

That's what I was going to say. I wouldn't contribute to the problem, anyway, but I sure as frick wouldn't let them INSIDE my house.

skilled labor

You talking about day laborers baw, unless the skill you’re describing is hauling sand from the front yard to the back, you’re going to be in trouble

I’ve done this a few times for basic labor and honestly each time I wished I hadn’t. The language barrier makes it a bit difficult to communicate clearly, but I think sometimes they may “play dumb”. Twice I’ve shown the guys pictures of whatever I needed done and agreed upon a price. Halfway through the day, they wanted more money and we parted ways. Another guy that I picked up for a landscaping project started out good, but then started asking if his friends could come and it just got annoying, so we parted ways.

I’ve tried using neighborhood kids and offered to pay $20/hour, but they’ve flaked out

What is working for me now is finding guys already on a crew. They usually know basic English, are good workers, and if they can’t do a job, they know someone who can. You get less BS this way. Even if let’s say you find someone on a roofing crew, they’re usually willing to do landscaping or other labor. Just keep their numbers and you’re good to go until they move elsewhere

Mexicans call Mexico home.

Hispanic people call many different countries home.

Home Depot is no one’s home.

Your home insurance will NOT cover you if they are injured on the job.

Contact your local high school and talk to the guy who teaches shop. Ask him to recommend some high school boys who are honest and who understand ethics.

Literally just got off the phone with a co worker who hired someone at Home Depot to install some new doors at our office.

I wouldn’t hire one to do work in an office. You are opening up the company to a whole bunch of liability if they get hurt. Also opening up the company to potential legal problems for hiring someone off the books and not paying taxes as well as hiring someone not eligible to work in the US.

Man was hired to cut a ladies tree down. He lied about WC insurance and he was hurt badly cutting down her tree. Cost her Home Owners policy $200K. Maybe it depends on the policy. The injured worker can sue the homeowner for everything they have and future earnings. Why risk it?

Or come back and steal all your shite.

Guy at work hired them to do landscaping. They did a great job.

Then he came home after work a few days later to fund he was missing his generator, a miter saw, and a bucket of hand tools he had.

Would have been cheaper to hire people outright.

Yes. Finding highly skilled is going to be a problem. They have highly skilled guys doing different things. Problem is the guy that speaks English is going to point at his buddy and tell you he knows drywall, framing, etc… whatever. His buddy may not know shite.

You will need to find one and ask him a few questions. Be ready to stop him in an hour and take him back to HD and get someone else.

Manual labor is available, skilled… you got to look and be prepared to stop and start over that day with a different person.

Thanks guys. Based on this feedback, I think my home project may be out of their expertise.

After reading through this thread, I am wondering if I am sitting on a goldmine, just waiting to open up a new business…

I had to make a Lowe’s run one day while I was moving and pulled up in a U-Haul. I thought they were going to swarm the truck.

That happened to me one time when I drove an F-250 (looked nothing like a work truck) to a Home Depot in the Atlanta area. Scared the hell out of me for half a second until I realized why.

You mean the guy who won't show up to give an estimate, won't return calls after he gives you the estimate, and also will lie over and over about when he will show up to start the job?
