Meta getting rid of third party fact checkers in favor of community notes-type system

Local news article
quote:
Meta’s newly appointed Chief of Global Affairs Joel Kaplan told Fox on Tuesday that Meta’s partnerships with third-party fact checkers were “well intentioned at the outset but there’s just been too much political bias in what they choose to fact check and how.”
The announcement comes amid a broader apparent ideological shift to the right within Meta’s top ranks, and as Zuckerberg seeks to improve his relationship with Trump before the president-elect takes office later this month.

So not allowing blatant liars to spread propaganda aka “fact check” is a departure from left wing ideology?

I find your post confusing. What are you trying to say?

Makes sense for a platform like Meta. Fact checking tends to shut down conversations and squash conspiracy theories, which in turn drives traffic down to their website.
Meta would prefer things stay unresolved and conflict remain between users. Angry/Upset users drive traffic to the website

A day late and a dollar short.
Facebook would censor opinions they didn't like under the guise of "fact checking". Like a lot of things branded as conspiracy theories lately (especially around Covid or elections), many of those censored posts ended up being true.

How it started: Muh Elon has no idea how to run Twitter.
How it's going: 1 year later Facebook copying his ideas.

I'm curious to see the ripple effect this has on the three letter organizations. They used these platforms at their whim, pitching our tax dollars to social media platforms to write their own narrative and gain public acceptance and shut down conservative voices essentially.
The catalyst to all of this is Elon purchasing Twitter. I don't agree with everything Elon does but none of this happens unless someone like Elon controlled one of the platforms.

"Fact checking" turns out to be way more subjective than some people think. If you care about the actual truth, you're probably dissatisfied with how "fact checkers" act.
Also, it's probably correct that X's Community Notes feature has driven a lot of engagement and interest. Zuck is smart to admit they beat him on that feature and adopt it for himself.
Lastly, it is kind of scary how the political winds blow these companies around. For all their wealth, they are scared by what politicians might do to them. Look at this, when AOC intimidated Zuck into what would eventually be "fact checking":

It was made very clear to the tech companies. If they didn't play ball with the party then in power, they were going to get roasted.

I won’t lose sleep if the fact checkers go out of business.

Joe Biden is fitter than he’s ever been.
You people are a complete joke.

Allow free discussion on immigration, gender, and other topics that were heavily censored in the past, as well as let these discussions freely propagate (and go viral).
