RICHLAND PARISH, La. (KNOE) - Meta is expanding its Richland Parish data center to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity, a move the company says would make it one of the largest data centers in history.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry is scheduled to host a press announcement event on the expansion Monday, July 13, in Baton Rouge.

The expansion includes more than $1 billion invested in local infrastructure improvements, covering roads, water and wastewater systems. The project is expected to support an estimated 7,500 construction jobs and 1,000 operational roles.

A smart energy agreement with Entergy Louisiana supporting the expansion is projected to save grid customers more than $2 billion over 20 years.

Meta is also providing a $5 million grant to Louisiana Delta Community College to train the next generation of local data center workers.

I’m guessing they figure they can get what ever they want in Louisiana so best to expand here, where they are starting to get push back in other cities and states.

Funny, there's an aluminum extrusion plant in Monroe area (hydro delhi) that I did business with decade+ ago, been in business since the 80s. Just heard they were closing later this year, came as a surprise to most of their customers. Got the explanation from their sales rep out of curiosity, the trump aluminum tariffs had them on life support for last year just like most downs team US aluminum companies are struggling now due to tariffs, and the META plant starting to hire was the bullet in the head. Apparently you cant run a business that requires skilled labor within 100 miles of that place, they took all of it.

Probably a net positive for LA anyway, but interesting.

5 gigawatts

That’s a staggering amount. It’s enough supply to power every home in Louisiana and Mississippi.

i do find it funny that they keep calling it a Meta center when they are a minority partner in it.

They’re not pulling from a drinking water aquifer. The aquifer they’re pulling from is mostly used for irrigation. It’ll be interesting to see what effect it’ll have on those ag wells in the area, though.

I have full confidence is our state regulatory agencies and Utilities to not screw this up.

the only thing funnier will be when this data center gets sued into oblivion by the trial lawyers. May take twenty years, but it will happen. With a vengence.

I think the Board Meeting minutes read like this:

Holy crap! We paid off a half dozen politicians and they are letting us do whatever the hell we want. Let’s put it all down there! Best part? Their politicians come cheap. We couldn’t get one mayor in CA for what we spent on all of them.

Yep more press releases to come, they are slow playing them. Heard it was going to be 80-100 billion investment back in December.

What? Louisiana, today, is 25GW and Mississippi is 16GW. Just saying.
