There are far greater shitholes than Memphis. Baltimore and Detroit are worse. I'd definitely live in Memphis over either of those.

Memphis has some very bad parts that are easily avoidable.
The good of Memphis, and there is a ton of good in Memphis, is not in those places.
It's what you make of it.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else than Midtown Memphis.

I lived in Mid-town when I was younger.
It was awesome as a single guy. Not the best place for kids though.

Well, that may be a bit of an embellishment. I live in BR but have been to Memphis many times and there are a lot of places I'd live over either of them
