Right. You know she’s praying she could go back in time and do things differently.

I guess she figured 15-20 years was the same as life to her and it was worth the risk

From what I recall reading she couldn’t make a plea desk because she recall any of the events that transpired? I don’t have a clue

She could have taken a plea deal but told her atty she wouldn’t bc she didn’t remember doing this.

“She has never changed her story,” said John McLindon, Curtin’s defense attorney. “She said, ‘John, I do not remember this.’ We talked about plea deals. She said, ‘I can’t plea to something I didn’t do.’ When you plead guilty, you have to sit up there in front of a judge and say that you did it. She said, ‘I can’t bring myself to do it. I do not remember this event.’”

Nice to see the Shaggy defense strategy still being deployed.

Of that 15-20 years for a potential plea, I’d imagine good time would cut the sentence significantly.

I didn’t realize Melanie and her former husband were both previously employed with LPSO.

“Adding to the disturbing nature of this case is the fact that Curtin worked for the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office starting in 2011—the same department as Perkins. Her ex-husband is also a former LPSO deputy.”

Depends on what, exactly, the plea would be to. If she were to plea to a sex offense, no:

***
(2) Diminution of sentence shall not be allowed an offender in the custody of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections if the instant offense is a sex offense as defined by R.S. 15:541.
***

If what she plead to was a sex offense that allowed for parole eligibility, she would be eligible to apply for parole for the first time after serving 75% of the sentence.

Like Josh said, calculating time is complicated, but she'd likely do at least 85% for a sex crime.

It's super fricky now. 65% parole and 75% good time on a first crime of violence. 75% parole no good time on a sex offense.

Not arguing with anything you’ve said but I have a question. If this was just another case of some backwood Denham Springs shite, do you think she would have received the life sentence? The publicity of the Perkins other vile shite didn’t do Curtin any favors. The people want blood (rightfully so) and Curtin put herself right in the middle of it.

She didn’t have anything to do with the kids or know anything about it did she? And what she was just found guilty of was videotaping him while he raped an unconscious women that they were drinking with?

If that’s the case I agree a life sentence without parole seems extremely excessive. Don’t get me wrong she’s a POS and needs to spend a good deal of time behind bars, but the rest of her life though? Surely if this were anyone else that wouldn’t have been the outcome. I’m not sure what seems like the right amount of time, 20 years maybe? But not life w/o parole.

And have Dennis and his wife not had their trials yet? I found that surprising, it would seem like they should have already.

She was convicted of performing oral sex on an unwilling adult, and engaging in the act of rape with at least one other person: Aggravated Rape/First Degree Rape.

Yeah, I'm always very clear that shite is constantly changing and DOC is its own animal, so I can't make any hard and firm promises. But, handling the types of cases I handle, if I wasn't willing to engage in some level of time calculation, I wouldn't be able to do my job. I fricking hate time calculation, though

ETA: When they changed the law a few years ago to improve good time and parole percentages, but only prospectively based on date of offense, explaining to guys why it didn't apply to them fricking sucked...

Surely her attorney told her that it doesn’t frickin matter if she remembers it or not and that there’s a videotape of her frickin doing it right? If that’s the case she’s absolutely insane not to take it. The case against her seems guaranteed and somehow she’s going to fight it? Seems nuts.
