Meet Julia, an autistic Muppet who's joined 'Sesame Street's' regular cast

A couple of years ago, Sesame Street took a major step toward reaching out to even more children by introducing a character named Julia, a Muppet meant to represent an autistic child. But the use of Julia was limited to a digital character.
That all ends now, as Julia is about to become a regular member of the Sesame Street cast.
The new Muppet was shown off on Sunday on 60 Minutes. Reporter Leslie Stahl was introduced to Julia on set by one of the most popular Muppets, Elmo. "We really like Julia," he said. "She's really special to us."
To get the character right, in addition to the regular child psychologists Sesame Street works with, the show also worked with autism organizations.
Explaining the reasoning behind bringing on the new character, Sesame Street writer Christine Ferraro said that it's an effort to help normalize interactions between children.
"So that when [children] encounter [autistic children] in their real life, it's familiar," said Ferraro. "And they see that these — these can be their friends, too."
Julia will make her official television debut in a few weeks.

Do you think kids will even catch on that this character is autistic or even acts different? I understand why they are introducing this character but it's not for the kids who watch the show. They don't know what autism is or even if they interact with an autistic kid in real life.

I take it you didn't go to school with an autistic kid? As someone who has, you can tell something is off, and the kid is often made fun of. This is a good thing

I know and have worked with autistic kids but it's becoming almost as over diagnosed as ADHD. Parents don't make their kids eat vegetables because they have "texture" issues.

Probably the ones that aren't autistic.

no no I did and I think someone who can comprehend what autism is should be taught why autistic kids act in a certain way. All I am saying is that the kids that watch sesame street are what? 2-6? It would be very difficult to teach them something like this and actually have it "stick" with them.

Some kids will notice. Some won't. they will notice the lessons taught around that storyline.

4chan autists win again. They've been on a fricking roll. I thought getting Trump elected was their pinnacle, clearly I was wrong.

Half the people on this board are autistic. We know autism when we see it.

I doubt it. I watched that show daily as a kid and I don't remember any specific episodes at all.
If this helps even a few autistic kids, good for Sesame Street
ETA: someone told me recently that Kermit is on the Muppets and Sesame street and it blew my fricking mind.

I have aspergers...and this is fricking stupid. kids don't know or understand. this is nothing more than vanity. someone gets a golf clap from some publications and gets their ego stroked for being "brave" and "socially responsible"

Kids can definitely tell when something is wrong with another kid. I have no problem with Sesame Street teaching kids how to deal with autistic children. Though I doubt this one in the show will be one of the worst autistic children that are constantly screaming and stuff.
Sesame Street is the one show on PBS that can thrive on its own without government funding, they make good decisions in their programming and theyve been extremely successful for years. They'll be fine after the cuts to PBS

holeesheet this. I can't deal with this. especially when the parent says "they are on the spectrum" but it's obvious that the kid doesn't have a lick of autism at all. They just dont want to eat vegetables and the parents give in way to easily.

If you actually have Asperger's then you lack the social skills to understand that kids can tell you are different

I wonder if Julia will start hitting people if they trigger her. You gotta teach kids how autistics can act.

I never went to school with an autistic child, but I can imagine it's tough for them. Looks like a good idea.

yeah, but it was something that was more evident when I was way too old for sesame st.
3, 4 and 5 year olds...they can't tell you're different. I didn't even know, but looking back on things I can tell you that divide started becoming a problem or noticeable to everyone (adults and kids) when I was in 2nd or maybe 3rd grade
I also barely talked until I was 5, and around 2nd grade I wouldn't shut the frick up. still can't
