Researchers at the Google Brain AI lab have developed a system known as a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN).
Conventional AI uses input to 'teach' an algorithm about a particular subject by feeding it massive amounts of information.
This knowledge can then be employed for a specific task - facial recognition being just one example.
GANs seek to generate new content from this learned information, creating digital content like pictures and video based on their understanding of similar real life images and footage.
These networks can be trained to recognise patterns in information - including speech, text data, or visual images - and are the basis for a large number of the developments in AI over recent years.

Cool, Skynet just became self aware. Been nice knowing yall.

Seriously. It's kinda weird knowing that a machine is creating "memories" from input it is getting internet.
This statement:
What if the machine deems that we are a threat to ourselves?

The results could add to our understanding and control of complex multi-agent systems such as the economy, traffic systems, or the ecological health of our planet – all of which depend on our continued cooperation.

I actually think AI isn't a good thing. I know now it is, but most really smart pyhsysicts and thinkers do truly believe a self aware stronger, faster , smarter than us machine could lead to our downfall.

Then we better hope the Avengers can save us.

It's not just a sci-fi movie question. There are a lot of reputable thinkers and scientists that are afraid of this question.

What was the old story about the guy who had the contest against the machine digging?
Look, the AI will always be running "thinking". Processing data. It will theoretically beable to do things like access your home via your internet connects. It could access vital systems within grids.
I assume it could be used for the greater good, but that requires me to trust people I know I do not trust.

Just get a 7th grader to write a virus to bring it down.

Why are there groups that are hellbent on creating AI that could wipe us out? Money? Fame?

The owners of the company that creates the first true AI will instantly become the richest and most powerful people who ever lived. Any country, no matter how small, would rule the world in no time with real AI. If it was developed somewhere else the USA would launch preemptive nuclear strikes against that country unless it was Israel or maybe the UK.

Once it learned enough, if you can control it.. then you OWN the world.
One man could literally change the life of any man anywhere.

Maybe, if it decides humans should still survive and be allowed to reproduce

The problem is that many of those really smart physicists are also very lonely and bitter and they are naturally predisposed to under appreciate the tragedy that our downfall would be. They tend to skew the narrative to overwhelmingly favor the rosie-go-lucky outcome, despite much reason to fear the worst case scenario

A lot of them genuinely want that. Some want to play god
