I actually think AI isn't a good thing. I know now it is, but most really smart pyhsysicts and thinkers do truly believe a self aware stronger, faster , smarter than us machine could lead to our downfall.
We're going to merge with the machines, not be overtaken by them. I think it's a lot more likely that humans go to war with each other over "enhanced" vs natural humans than a Super AI becomes Skynet and kills us all.

I don't understand why people are so scared of this. If you don't like what they are doing unplug them. They may become "self-aware" but they will never be self powered.

I know in the movies and other media it is portrayed that they would just kill us, but why kill us? Why not fix whatever is wrong with us?
Because an advanced self-replicating and self-programming AI would be an utterly alien intelligence that would have almost no similarities to how humans think. Let's say you build one of these AIs and give it one goal: Eradicate cancer.
It thinks for a couple of days coming up with its solution. Then it kills every living thing on the planet. Goal reached.

Because we're not machines. We're not really all that fixable.
