We were looking hard for one in Southern Utah, Northern Arizona last week, but they are so rare to see. The lady at the Grand Canyon visitor center said they have a sighting about every other year there.
Sounds like you could have done something more productive with your time

They're actually very common roaming the wild in Florida.
Whoa. I had no idea.

looks like the panther was thinking the exact same thing she was saying
"Oh my God, oh my God, holy shite!"

She was astonishingly calm. Someone's got themselves a winner

About 15 years ago - I detoured from my normal route between SELA and Dallas to check out Halifax Plantation (not knowing it had been razed). Was kinda sad approaching the slab as the sun was setting.
Suddenly what I thought was a pile of leaves started moving and I realized it was a panther moving towards me. It got up to about 10 yards away, sniffed the wind and plodded off towards the treeline. I was holding a camera but was too scared to even lift it.
Only time I'd seen one in the wild alive (seen several hit by cars on the side of the road over the years).
ETA:
Halifax was a little South of Shreveport.

No they aren't at all. Florida Panther sightings are quite rare here in Florida. I'm fortunate that I've seen two in 18 years.......One on Cape Canaveral property and one on West Coast on road heading out to Ozello.

Right, but my gf is obsessed with cats, and she still wanted to see one, despite us telling her this. Its not like we were out searching the wilderness for cats, we were just scanning the woods and rocks that we'd pass while in the car or on a trail.
I was in Yosemite NP and saw a gigantic bobcat (possibly Lynx?) on the half dome hiking trail. It was a badass giant cat on the prowl. Well I and a few other people watched this cat hunt down a fat squirrel and rip it to shreds in a very gruesome scene. It was awesome

Wow! I'm jealous. I bet that was incredible.

I'm jealous of this Canadian Veterinarian who nursed this Canadian Lynx back to health...

I wouldn't go that far - she still filmed it in fricking portrait mode.

Panthers live in Florida. While rare, they are there.

I'm a dumbass.
I don't have FB... but my mom does. She sent me that pic from a viral post from February.
It's a veterinarian from one of the big cat rescue groups up there.
Here's a bigger image:
Bet you can track it down from the signage.

LOL! That was an extremely rare encounter.
