there are no jaguars in florida, unless they're in a zoo.

Yeah that was a panther, cougar, puma, catamount, mountain lion, whatever you want to call it, all the same.

We were looking hard for one in Southern Utah, Northern Arizona last week, but they are so rare to see. The lady at the Grand Canyon visitor center said they have a sighting about every other year there.

If you find one it's because he invited you to be dinner more than likely. They don't really want to be found unless it's on their terms and that's bad for humans.

Guess you don't really like Detroit Tigers/Lions, Chicago Bears, or the Cincy Bengals.

Florida Panther. Were extremely endangered about 20-30 years ago and didn't have a broad enough gene pool to survive so they started shipping in western mountain lions ( a cousin, same species) to interbreed and has brought their numbers up considerably. They are still rare to see unless you're in a tree stand for hours at a time. Occasionally will see one hit by a vehicle on the side of alligator alley.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but the term panther is a blanket term for multiple species of large cats. The terms mountain lion, Florida panther, jaguar, etc are all regional variations of the same animal.

Explain? I'm not disputing your claim, I have just always heard and read that they were all the same.

Right, but my gf is obsessed with cats, and she still wanted to see one, despite us telling her this. Its not like we were out searching the wilderness for cats, we were just scanning the woods and rocks that we'd pass while in the car or on a trail.

fair enough, usually there is an explanation though, like at LSU

but just knowing there are wild big cats in florida, and having an expansion team however many years ago, you would think the mascot would at least be a big cat native to florida

A jaguar is a different animal. Cougars, mt lions & panthers all refer to the same animal

ETA: Also called puma & catamount too

Um, no. Not at all actually. There are estimates of their only being about 100 left in the wild. So no. Not a commonly seen animal.

Panthers don't roar. They purr and yowl. Their yowl is creepy.

Free range Tigers in NOLA would make me want to come back and watch them work. That' would clean up the homeless issue with a quickness.

They are considered a subspecies of cougar but the genetic differences are minimal so cougar, mt. Lion, etc. are all OK really.

No big deal. Your average ot baller would have that thing on its back yowling for mercy like a barnyard cat in about 3 seconds.
