This is a great idea. Emotional support is so important in this situation.

Also, I will add that people should get a supplemental Cancer plan. They aren't that expensive. Men, we have a 50/50 chance of getting cancer and women 1 out three. The cost financially can be devastating. Even more so when a child is diagnosed with Cancer. Being self employed, it certainly came in handy when I had my bout with cancer.

I’m not sure if this is the exact program, but this group does the same thing.

Related, if you have a child admitted at TCH or anywhere in the Texas Medical Center there is a very nice Ronald Mcdonald House that was a lifesaver for me and my family. Lunch and dinner donated by some local charity almost every single day, a free shuttle on demand, and really nice recently renovated rooms. Free to anyone regardless of financial need- all you have to do is call them and pass a background check.

What a great idea! There is a group in Houston called Ground Angels that coordinates transportation on the ground for MDA parients. I think they often work with Pilots for Patients. Maybe start a 501C so that you can get matching funds from those of us that have that benefit available? You could probably raise funds with an auction...Imthink it sounds very promising.

Ground Angels.

That's a great idea. I go there every few months to get blood work and scans. I get my treatments locally. Luckily my brother lives in Houston and I stay with him when I go.

Like someone else said you can get a list of free places to stay nearby but they fill up really fast.

My wife just got back from MD Anderson Tuesday for her check up. She's been cancer free for 7 years now.

Sign her up.

Bump to note -- MD Anderson is partnering with Ochsner in the new cancer center on Highway 21 and I12 in Covington.

At the time I could have gone to UCLA Cancer Center or MD Anderson. I chose MD Anderson due to this guy Dr Andre Goy was famous in treating the cancer I had. The guy went back to New York or New Jersey. LINK

While having inpatient chemo there was 6 others in my floor getting treatment which they lived in Louisiana.

When I was treated there I bought a condo in Bellaire and furnished it with furniture from a rent to own place. I was fortunate to have the means to do this which a lot of people do not. Furnished 1 bedrooms back then was $2,500 to $3k in the medical center.

A big help for people from Louisiana would be to raise money to supplement the rent for a temporary furnished apartment in the medical center. Their will be some cases people
have to stay for treatment for an extended period.

Next pain would be getting transportation this was pre Uber days to get food and medicine or to have someone watch the patient while the care giver gets to go to the store for medicine or food.

I've heard of a few people with planes (small hobby planes/little company planes) that are part of a program that fly people to and from Houston for their treatment at MD Anderson

I know some pilots that do this in Monroe.

This is such a great idea! My husband and I just got back from MDA last week for his monthly scans and lab work. He has brain cancer so we will be going for the foreseeable future.

Look into Hospitality Apartments for both a place to stay as a Houston Medical District patient OR an organization to donate to. I’ve been here since 6/28 and have only paid a $100 cleaning fee. Washer/dryer is free, parking is free, cable is free, very clean, very friendly VOLUNTEER staff, very great place to stay while going through some tough times. It is on the MD Anderson shuttle route and is supported by a ton of Houston churches.

The wait list is long, so get on it early and keep in touch. I have met several other residents that have been in Houston for A LOT longer than me and this place is a HUGE benefit.

Consider supporting it and (God forbid you need to be here) utilizing it.

I cannot say enough positive things about the place.

I'd be glad to talk with anyone that has to go there as far as tips and general emotional support. Went there heavily from 2014 to 2017 and spent three weeks there right before covid started in 2020.
