things probably used to be different, but yeah, having a good/ smart high school kid working with the dregs of society in fast food or retail doesn’t feel like a productive use of time

A fair point but there's a world of difference between a suburban Chik-fil-A and a Detroit McDonald's.
Sometimes it's also good for sheltered teenagers to see how the other half actually lives in order to motivate them.

My son watched “The Bear” and then got a job in the kitchen of a nice-ish restaurant in Baton Rouge when he was in undergrad. His fellow workers were mostly ex-cons and after 3 months of “rape jokes?”, my son quit. It changed his views and not to a more liberal view.
