I have experience working in the trash and recycling industry. This is common place to the point that these companies hire special advisors months or years in advance of an election to give them the advantage over their competition.

called about getting a recycling bin a few years ago and they said i had to pay for one to be dropped off at my house. I said im not going to pay for a bin for them to make money off my recyclables.
Did the same when I moved and our new home didn't have a recycling bin, was told it was 500 dollars to get one.

Mayors and police chiefs. Port Allen and St. Gabriel too. As I understand it, the FBI's goal was to get the mayor of St. Gabriel who they'd been after for awhile. I think he called himself the "Black Godfather"

$85 monthly for a small recycling bin.
No thanks

To me it makes sense to charge for the bin so that the resident is now the owner of it.
I'll tell you why they shouldn't charge for bins, its not uncommon for a bin (regular or recycle type) to "stick" to the arm that lifts it and dumps the trash in the garbage truck and the bin is lost forever.
Trust me, I went out to roll my bin up one morning and it was gone. We thought some kid was pulling a prank on us, but after calling the trash people we were told that this often happens, the truck "eats the can".
They sent us a new one, free of charge.

The only reason we would switch is if the service was cheaper. Would we actually see a lower bill -- i dont think so!

Yeah screw that. I thought it was a one time fee.

The bins are free.

For you maybe. I never said I lived in Baton Rouge.

The bins are free. Y'all crazy. The garbage bill is $20 per month and includes recycling pick up.
Also, the city doesn't net money on recycling. They make make money on one product (aluminum) which is eaten by the cost of recycling glass and paper.

I don't know who these people are talking to about charging for a recycle bin. The first one in EBR parish is free as is the garbage can. If you want more than one you have to pay. If you want a new one you give them the reason ie...broken wheel etc...and the number imprinted on the bin and they drop a new one off and take the old one back.
Call 311.
They cannot negotiate a new contract unless the original contract has that stipulated and sometimes it does. Otherwise it has to be a public bid and for garbage there is only a small group of companies that are capable of providing the service. Kip negotiated this contract several times and Broome will do what is needed because it is part of her job not because she is looking for money.
The way to save money-that is normally brought up is go to once a week pickup. Every time that is shot down by the citizens including me. I want twice a week pickup.
The recycling in EBR saves the city a lot of money by reducing landfill use, fuel, labor, insurance etc...which in theory should benefit us.
If you want to reduce a service that I would support have the federal government eliminate Saturday postal delivery. That will save a huge sum of money however people still say no.

What I would like to see is a public accounting of our huge sewer remediation program. Kip ran on a platform that he would save money with his sewer strategy because mayor Simpson's was too expensive.

Im in Covington and we happen to use Progressive for trash service. When we were in BR the recycling was free but when we moved here, we were told there was a monthly fee to do recycling service. So unfortunately we dont recycle. Its a shame too bc a large portion of our trash could be recycled.

We've had recycle pickup included with our city assessment in West Palm for 15 years. Not sure how much it is but $85 a month seems pretty ridiculous. It's like they don't want people to recycle

WTF dude? Thread is about East Baton Rouge Parish. Now everyone thinks it is $85 a month.

We all know why we had to do the remediation, the question is not why we are doing it; the question is whether Kip saved us money, and what all this is costing us and what will the final cost be.
If you don't care if our money is being managed properly that's fine, but I and many others do care.
Just because the EPA mandated the problem be fixed doesn't give the parish a blank check to waste money needlessly.
Kip said he would save us millions of dollars, did he or didn't he?
