Mayor Broome and Councilman Watson battle over blame for loss of 600k tire shedder grant

Councilman Matt Watson is blaming Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome's administration for bungling a $605,000 federal grant and losing out on a first-of-its-kind tire shredder — but Broome counters that Watson is all talk and no action, and says she's not responsible for his failures. Watson, who spearheaded the tire shredder project on the Metro Council, said he worked tirelessly to secure the grant and establish a location that would "remove blight and improve public sanitation." He said the debacle marks "another opportunity lost" by Broome to better the parish.
"Councilman Watson prefers to talk about ideas while letting others do the work," Broome said. The tire-shredding project, funded by a $605,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevent, once seemed like a promising solution to addressing the thousands of tires dumped illegally in the city's poorest neighborhoods.
But, for much of the last year, the Metro Council struggled to come to an agreement on a suitable location for the facility. And, after the Mayor's Office missed a Sept. 1 deadline to purchase the equipment, a local contractor pulled out of the project, citing political and bureaucratic dysfunction.
quote:Broome responded that it is "typical in political seasons for candidates to blame the opposition for their failures," and said that Watson "had neither the will nor the capability to make this project a reality."
We made this as easy as possible for Sharon Weston Broome's administration to simply follow the process on behalf of the residents here — and even that was too difficult," Watson said.

There were hurdles put before me at every turn by a political establishment that would rather wring its hands than take action for people here in our community," Watson said.

For months, the project faced headwinds on the Metro Council, primarily from Chauna Banks, a Democratic councilwoman who protested Watson's original proposal to place the shredder in her predominantly Black, low-income district. Meetings on the matter frequently turned heated.
Chauna Banks is the one to blame

This really falls more on Chauna Banks than anyone else, she's the one who kept fighting a perfectly suitable location in a building already owned by MARC.

The north baton ruugeans didn't want a tire shredder near them. Even though that's where the abandoned blight problem actually is.
They are unable to see the forest through the trees.

This makes it sound like rich people were driving across town to dump tires...

Tire shredders in black neighborhoods is racist.

Broome is the mayor. She is elected to run the parish. She provided no leadership in this endeavor as she sat on the side lines while the C-P Council led by race baiters in NBR stopped the project.
Watson was elected to serve a district in south EBR, and the fact he was involved indicated NBR council persons were happy with the status quo and didn’t care if the old tires were ever picked up and dealt with in a responsible matter. Blaming Watson for a parish wide problem that is primarily in the waste lands of the parish indicates just how poor Broome’s leadership has been.

Watson literally had a site lined up and someone who would operate it free of charge. Broome made no attempt to mediate with her race baiting buddy Chauna Banks to get the deal done and now they will continue to bitch about tires and other blight in NBR without providing any real solutions other than to throw money at it.

Yes, and Broome didn’t want to do the right thing and take her on, She stayed out of it and left the tire problem alone.

This is true. She could have stepped in and helped make the decision that would have benefitted EBR as a whole, but nope.

quote:Exactly. Hell, not even rich. People who work for a living and pay for the tire disposal fee as part of the deal of getting new tires.

Seems pretty important when it comes to the blame game.

No doubt. It doesn't, however, change the fact that Broome is a disgrace, a failure on every level and a racist and her administration has been one of the worst in our lifetime. At this point, I don't care who is elected (outside of C. Denise, who may be a bigger racist even), it just better not be Broome. She makes John Bel look competent.

THIS is the real reason things went down the way they did.
A south Baton Rouge councilman and a white woman contractor were going to fix the problem.
FIXING THE PROBLEM OF ABANDONED TIRES is not the primary goal of this exercise. Gaining political points and enriching Democratic North Baton Rouge supporters of Chauna is the goal. Chauna and Broome could give two rat fricks about the people living in that district. They only care about themselves and their donors.
This project would have been a win for Watson and the contractor, not black - not a donor to Chauna, would have made money. No way Chauna and Broome were going to allow that to happen.
