I understood the OP to be splitting 100 into thirds. I'm also pretty buzzed.

Also, dividing six by three and one by three are different problems.

I just realized 1/12 = .083333333 repeating.

Who’s the fricking dumbass who invented the feet/inches measurement system and why did we listen to him? Or is there some cool reason inches/feet are better than centimeters/meters?

I get that. He said dividing into thirds is impossible when it’s not impossible for every case.

That's fair. In this thread I'm just referring to one divided by three.

At today’s gold price of $1500.82/ounce the difference is 24 cents. Sounds like that kid needs to thank Pops for the gold and move on.

I shouldn't have used the word "anything", you are correct. I had tunnel vision and was only thinking of dividing one by three.

It is not different. Both are exactly divisible by 3.

You can split six apples equally among three people, but each person has 2/6 or 1/3 of the total apples. What a conundrum!

Wrong

Pops should have given 30% to each and 10% to charity and we don't have this dumbass math problem.

frick that dude.

How is it exact? Is there not always a repeating digit? I've never been a math guy so I know next to nothing.

1/3 = 0.333 repeating
1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1

So

0.333 repeating + 0.333 repeating + 0.333 repeating must also equal 1.

Not that this is all that rigorous of a proof, but you get the idea.

bullshite. He can give each kid 3 1/3 pound. Just because you can't represent it in a non-repeating decimal doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

ITT: The OT is bad at math... again.
