Are we operating in Real number space? If not your 2x=2 assumption doesn't hold, especially if we are working with say modular numbers.

I didn't see a given set at the beginning of the problem.

You're a brick wall. You see, I understand how the it's 15 people are looking at the problem. I get it. I just think this was set up as a trick question, because I view each picture as an independent variable that needs to be separately defined. That you can't understand this way of looking at the problem is not my problem, it's yours.

Why do you think the problem uses pictures instead of letters/variables? That in itself is significant because it gives the student tangible things to work with. Second, it means we have to pay attention to what the pictures are. Why are you ignoring common sense and logic and creating an "assumption"?
