It is not an assumption that if 2x=2, then x=1. The mugs are exactly the same, and that's important. You are downplaying its importance to carry on the argument.

You don't calculate equations strictly left to right, there's an order of operations (My Dear Aunt Sally). Then there's the bullshite of being tricksy with just one mug of beer.
5 + (1 x 10) = 5 + 10 = 15
So there were 2 places to mess it up, Order of Operations and then did you notice they changed a variable on you.

The question these guys are presenting is "does the picture hold any significance?"
Of course it does. This is a "real life" problem using pictures of real items. So logically, we take them as such. Whoever created the problem did so with one picture being of two mugs and another of a single mug. How is that not significant? How can any teacher or person who knows basic math see that difference and write it off when explaining or working the problem? It's like these guys noticed it, it proved them wrong, and now they're so upset that they were tricked that they are making up "assumptions" so they don't feel so stupid. That's where we are right now. It's baffling.
