Why not? Symbols are arbitrary distinctions. One is no better than the other. That is kind of the only decent point of the puzzle.

Has nothing to do with what the mugs look like.

so if the picture was of two "x"'s next to each other, you're going to ignore that they are the exact same?

Yes you are. Didn't realize you don't know how math with symbols as variables worked.

But we are looking at items here. Taking the picture as a whole seems to be a bigger assumption than simply looking at each item individually as intended
I agree. But look what you said

"a bigger assumption"

Which means, even your theory is an assumption

Case closed

A multiplication sign is a multiplication sign. A bottle is a bottle. A burger is a burger. Two mugs is two mugs. Where's the assumption?

You can say I'm wrong till you're blue in the face. It won't make it true.

No. Each ITEM is a variable. We have to determine the value of each ITEM to find the final solution.

For any and all practical purposes, I agree.

If I was laying this out on a table with burgers, bottles, and mugs, no one would say it was undefined.

Correct. However, what we have here is straight variable pictures. Not individual items laid out.

99% I would say the INTENT was to make them individual items. But that is still and ASSUMPTION

The posters trying to say that each individual picture is a variable are being much more impractical than they want to believe. I get it. It makes them feel better. But it's way more flawed than simply seeing each item as the variable since, you know, that's how this "real life" problem is intended to work.

You can type that over and over again. It doesn't make you more right or more wrong. It just means that's what you think. I disagree because of the way the problem was presented. Good day sir.

No need to be sorry. I'm right and I think I've made a pretty strong case for that. All you've got is "it's different pictures" trying to ignore what the pictures are simply because it makes you feel better.
