This will be one of the biggest benefit changes that occurs over the next 10-20 years. The USA is so far behind the curve re: family leave. I actually think it will become a national story that men get equal leave as women (flips the typical direction of the conversation).
I think my company offers 6 weeks paid for women.

Very generous. The consensus among my friends and the client companies I've worked with is:
- vaginal birth, 12 weeks, 6 weeks partially paid through short term disability, the remainder unpaid
-c-section, 12 weeks, 8 weeks partially paid through short term disability, the remainder unpaid
A lot of smaller companies don't offer short term disability, nor are they legally obligated to give any time off but most do something because it is a good business practice. The companies with 50 or more have to give 12 weeks FMLA (as long as the employee qualifies).
With my first I was out 10 weeks, paid 50% through short term disability for the first 6, they paid for my insurance the entire time. With the four-month old (sitting on my lap right now) I went back after less than a month. But I work from home, part time so it was a pretty easy transition and 100% voluntary on my part. :)
My husband's company just announced they will be doing a month of paid paternity leave later this year. Previously it was two weeks, unpaid.

Pretty much. It is crazy how little people here value time off and life outside of work.
Why do you think that is? Everything is getting more expensive. Food, Healthcare, income tax, property tax. The problem is that a large part of your income goes to support "other groups" and "other policies" in supporting the less fortunate or the victimized without your consent is an indication why you have to work so much to have a similar lifestyle.
You are talking about treating the symptoms. You're not talking about treating the cause.

Come on. Now the employer should act out of fear? Getting paid and maybe future promotions should be sufficient motivation for doing a fine job. If you're the kind who's willing to steal at work to justify your stance, you're not just a bad employee...you're a shitty person in general.
How you can criticize the character of people, while also criticizing people who think that maternity leave should be a benefit offered by employers.

With the way this country is going, I'm thinking an employer will have to pay for employee's decision to have time off for transgender operation. Employee might have to pay for the operation.

Most companies offer Short Term Disability. Which give you this for pregancy:
6 weeks for vaginal delivery at 60% pay-Which is really 4 weeks. Because the fist two weeks are unpaid, unless you have PTO to use.
8 weeks for C-section at 60% pay-Which is really 6 weeks. Because the first two weeks are unpaid, unless you have PTO to use

Sounds like your daughter is lucky to have a job where she can be gone for 12 weeks and not affect the companies productivity.
She should do her best to hold on to that job.
She is likely not doing ANY work at all for them.
this is a pretty ignorant comment. I work for a company that has similar benefits for maternity leave, and the women I work with who have utilized it were very much missed while they were out. I too am in the insurance business.

-No paid maternal leave (worst in the world)
-Worst vacation policy in the world.
Can you point to the country on the map, that has been to the moon???

Maternity leave in the USA...
Should be negotiable like every other part of your contract with your employer and not mandated by the Gov't

So Progressive has to spend more money and time hiring someone new(HR, recruiting fees, training).
The point in providing maternity leave at 100% is because it is expected that you return to work. I see you've never been in a hiring position.

Guess where progressive is getting that money? Jacking up premiums from excising customers, whom some are mothers. So progressive is not the "hero" of this, it's the customers. It's all political.
I also see that you're no actuary. You are misinformed if you think progressive employees are paid directly from insured premium dollars. There is not an insurance company on the planet that could survive if that were the case.

This makes me wonder how it affects the so called wage gap. Twelve weeks unpaid would certainly have some financial impact on an employee. There is no way I could take off for twelve weeks without pay. I'm sure the same goes for most men.

we should just raise it to 52 weeks with 100% pay and then see how many people want to hire women.......

I'll say this, I'm not going to get to caught up in paid maternity leave if a company offers similar paid vacation time. It sucks having to use paid vacation for maternity time, but I can live with it. Many people use vacation to fill on the gaps of 60% STD.
Also, while not super easy to find, I believe they offer individual STD policies.

12 weeks is too long for 100% pay. Maybe 6 weeks, then 6 weeks unpaid with job security.

I have a hard time believing every country in Africa enforces paid maternity leave.

Congrats on the new grandkid. However, why would a company pay a person for no work performed? Want to have 12 weeks off? Sure. You shouldn't expect to get paid for a personal choice.
Have you not seen the makeup of this country and the voters? Everyone wants to be paid for not doing any work. That is why democrats will continue to be elected.
