Maternity leave in the USA...

My daughter in law just gave birth to grandbaby #6....she works for Progressive insurance and gets 12 weeks off, 100% pay. Seems very reasonable to me. Is this more or less than the standard in today's business climate?

That sounds very progressive.

I would guess that's a generous amount of time but not sure

No... that's quite... progressive.

They are just insuring that your daughter-in-law doesn't fall into hard times

The 12 weeks via FMLA is pretty standard, but I don't think the 100% pay is as common. Think my wife's was 60%.

I think 6 paid is okay but fmla for the rest.

Family leave refers to the time you spend caring for your baby after she arrives. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 grants all parents (including dads and adoptive parents) the same unpaid 12 weeks. You can begin the 12 weeks before you give birth, but then you'll have less time afterward.
12 weeks with pay - that's very progressive thinking.

Yeah my wife was off for the full 12 and it was around 60%. One hundred percent pay is crazy

That is very generous. Companies don't have to give anything at all, except allow for 12 weeks of unpaid leave. My wife received around 40% of her salary during that period. This wasn't paid by the company, rather, it is a lump sum short-term leave insurance policy payment.
This country is arse backwards when it comes to paid time off for having a child. Time we catch up to the rest of the world on this one.

Every place will grant 12 weeks of leave. The big difference is how much compensation. If the mother doesnt have disability insurance(pays about 60%), she will have to rely on the vacation and sick time she has built up. The rest will be unpaid leave.

In Croatia they are granted a 1 year maternity leave with 100% pay.

Rare and very generous. Good for Progressive.

Congrats on the new grandkid. However, why would a company pay a person for no work performed? Want to have 12 weeks off? Sure. You shouldn't expect to get paid for a personal choice.

MrsWafer (no pics) is in the midst of a 12 week stretch as we speak.

Sounds like your daughter is lucky to have a job where she can be gone for 12 weeks and not affect the companies productivity.
She should do her best to hold on to that job.
She is likely not doing ANY work at all for them.

You get 6 weeks in the Air Force with exemptions on physical standards test for a year.
