For transgender and nonbinary people, paying with a plastic card bearing a name that conflicts with their appearance can be stressful. The disconnect may provoke suspicion or hostility, advocates say, turning a simple shopping trip into a minefield.

But soon, cards issued by some banks on the Mastercard network will let customers use their chosen names on payment cards — even if they have not changed their legal names.

Mastercard said this week that BMO Harris Bank in December would become the first institution to offer debit and A.T.M. cards under the network’s True Name initiative.

Wait it sounds like their real names are causing them the anxiety? Why would they not change it then?

I like how this pretends cashiers are suspicious because your card says Josephine and you're obviously Joe in a dress

They're just weirded out and want you to go away

An all too obvious societal need. Kudos to Mastercard for solving real world problems.

Right, it’s like they think if it weren’t for the damned name on the card that no one would ever suspect the were born a guy

So how does a merchant verify this?

Gonna be funny when a cashier that actually checks IDs won't take their payment because their drivers license says Bruce but their credit card says Kaitlyn

I doubt its the name on the card that is the reason the cashier is looking at them funny. Most cashiers never look at the name on the card, but they do notice when a "woman" has a 5 o'clock shadow and an adam's apple

Its telling how a certain ideological group of people and companies are trying to artificially popularize mental illness. We've seen parents forcing their kids to be something they're not and now promoting people who can't handle their own name.

If being comfortable with who you are is stressful then it's time to see a good psychiatrist.
